Job description

Senior Engineer, New Product Introduction (Metrology)

Pacific Biosciences is seeking a highly motivated metrology engineer to join the Consumable NPI team to work on current and next generation products. This opportunity involves working as part of a highly diverse, multi-disciplinary team to produce and develop highly complex and biologically integrated consumables for the sequencing technology.

The ideal candidate is a very independent thinker and self-starter who works great in a team setting as well as on individual projects. A broad knowledge of wafer metrology is essential. This person will work very closely with internal/external partners to improve and ensure the quality of wafer metrology, and to support the yield improvement efforts throughout the product lifecycle.

The candidate must have an appetite for solving complex problems requiring holistic evaluation of product factors and actively seek opportunities for improvement based on statistically meaningful, data-driven conclusions. Software and database experience and advanced data analysis skills are also highly desirable.

Responsibilities
  • Developing, improving, and sustaining wafer metrology processes to support both R&D and high-volume manufacturing
  • Providing hands‑on support for all technical and data aspects of wafer metrology activities on the production line, including proprietary in‑house metrology tools
  • Working with external partners, R&D, QA, manufacturing, and supply chain to meet production targets and drive timely execution of engineering projects
  • Designing and executing statistical analyses, such as Design of Experiments (DOE) and Statistical Process Control (SPC), to identify the physical failure mechanism and improve yield and quality
  • Designing and performing Measurement System Analysis (MSA), Process Capability Analysis, Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Gage Repeatability & Reproducibility (GR&R)
  • Developing and preparing clear and concise documentation including Statement of Work, work instruction, IQOQ protocol and report, TMV protocol and report, deviation, ECOs, NCRs et al
Required Qualifications
  • Typically requires a minimum of 4-8 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or a minimum of 2-6 years with a Master's degree; or a minimum of 0-5 years with a PhD degree
  • A degree in Applied physics, Optics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent required
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain close and effective working relationships with internal stakeholders and third‑party vendors
  • Experience with semiconductor wafer metrology and proficiency in an electro‑optical laboratory environment
  • Significant proficiency with JMP, MATLAB, SQL, Python
  • Knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing processes
  • Strong knowledge in NPI, CAPA, FMEA, Statistical Process Control, and lean manufacturing
  • Analytical and data driven mindset
  • Thrives in a dynamic, fast paced environment
  • Positive attitude, and a strong team player
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Require working in a clean room or lab environment and the ability to lift up to 40 lbs
  • 15% international travel may be required
Preferred Experience
  • Experienced with silicon photonic wafer metrology is a plus
  • Experienced with consumable chip NPI for sequencing technology is a plus
  • Knowledge of biochemistry and/or NGS is a plus
