Job summary

Domtar is seeking a Senior Engineer, Mechanical in Hawesville, KY. The role focuses on preventive/predictive maintenance, troubleshooting, upgrades, and safety compliance within an industrial mill setting.

You will lead the maintenance crew, coordinate with production and management, and ensure detailed CMMS record-keeping. The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 2–6 years of relevant experience, and is proficient in SAP, AutoCAD, MS Office and scheduling

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 2–6 years of industrial mill experience as Mechanical/Maintenance Engineer preferred.
  • Maintenance experience in industrial/process plant environment.
  • Ability to interact with all organizational levels including senior leaders.
  • Selection process may include interviews, background checks, drug/alcohol screen, references, aptitude tests and fitness-for-duty tests.

Responsibilities

  • Preventive and predictive maintenance planning to maximize equipment uptime.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues promptly.
  • Recommend and implement equipment upgrades or modifications.
  • Ensure safety, health, and environmental compliance (OSHA/EPA; LOTO).
  • Maintain detailed maintenance records in CMMS.
  • Coordinate with production, operations and management; communicate with stakeholders.
  • Lead the mechanical maintenance crew in supervisor’s absence; oversee contractors.
  • Develop job and outage planning to support projects.

The location in Hawesville, (Kentucky, United States), is seeking talent to fill the position of Senior Engineer, Mechanical. This job is full-time permanent.

Essential Functions:
  • Preventive and predictive maintenance: Develop, implement, and track preventative maintenance schedules to maximize equipment uptime and minimize breakdowns. Use predictive maintenance techniques and data from monitoring systems to anticipate failures.
  • Troubleshooting and repair: Diagnose and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues in a timely manner.
  • Installation and upgrades: Recommend and implement upgrades or modifications to improve equipment performance and reliability.
  • Safety and compliance: Ensure all maintenance activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations, including OSHA and EPA standards. Follow company safety procedures, such as Lockout/Tagout.
  • Record-keeping: Maintain detailed and accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and equipment history, often using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Collaboration: Work with production, operations, and management teams to coordinate maintenance schedules and support projects. Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders to find and implement solutions.
  • Leadership: Lead the mechanical maintenance crew in the absence of the supervisor. Oversee contractors.
  • Planning: Develop job planning and project planning skills to assist with outage planning.
Skills/Competencies:
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Candidate must have a deep understanding of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to work in challenging environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent computer skills with computer-based maintenance software such as SAP, MS Office and scheduling software. The ability to utilize AutoCAD is an asset.
Required Qualifications/Professional Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • It is preferred that the candidate have 2-6 years of experience working in an industrial mill as a Mechanical/ Maintenance Engineer. Experience on projects with an operating company or engineering firm as part of a team is considered an asset.
  • Maintenance experience in industrial/process plant environment.
  • Ability to work with all levels of the organization, including the management committee and senior leaders.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a selection process that could include interviews, an employment background check, a pre-employment drug and alcohol screen, reference verifications, aptitude tests (for some positions), and a fitness-for-duty test (for some positions).
