Job summary

Duke Energy is seeking a Senior Engineer to manage advanced EMS engineering work with minimal supervision. The role requires independent problem solving and the ability to guide complex projects across the enterprise.

The candidate should have ABET-accredited engineering degree and 6+ years of related experience; a Master's degree may substitute for the B.S. degree. Expect strong communication and a proactive, team-based approach.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
• Six (6) years minimum required related experience.
• A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Responsibilities

• Provides engineering/technical expertise in identification, analysis and resolution of complex EMS problems.
• Conducts engineering studies with responsibility for planning and coordinating complex projects.
• Applies knowledge to improve business processes and develop standards in EMS.
• Ensures cyber security, NERC CIP, and O&P compliance for EMS environments.
• Maintains knowledge of EMS software applications (State Estimator, Contingency Analysis, Network).
• Leads development of corporate positions on technical matters related to EMS direction.
• Serves on 24x7 callout rotation.
• Supports achievement of business goals through planning, scheduling and monitoring of activities.

Position Summary:

The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Responsibilities

• Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of complex EMS problems with the ability to visualize long-term results and assess impacts on a system-wide basis.
• Conducts engineering and related studies with full technical responsibility for planning and coordinating complex projects; applies extensive technical expertise to manage projects and disseminate knowledge to enhance the organizational unit's competitive position.
• Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures; demonstrates ability to analyze and recommend enhancements to business processes and develops standards relevant to the EMS. Keeps abreast of new developments, technologies procedures and equipment.
• Works with IT and EMS teammates to ensure proper cyber security, NERC and O&P compliance for EMS environment.
• Maintains and exercises in depth knowledge of EMS advanced software applications (State Estimator, Contingency Analysis, Network)
• Provides leadership in the development of corporate positions on technical matters related to the future direction of EMS.
• Serves on 24x7 callout rotation.
• Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
• Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
• Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
• Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
• Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
• Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

Required/Basic Qualifications:

Additional Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive experience with General Electric Grid EMS/DMS systems.
• In Depth knowledge of NERC CIP cyber security standards.
• Broad experience with Electric Transmission systems, including NERC transmission reliability standards (BA, TOP, etc.)
• Comprehensive experience with real time computer systems, including programming languages (C++, FORTRAN, etc.), scripting languages (PERL, etc.).
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to form and maintain positive working relationships with teammates, peers and clients and to coordinate between team members, business units, support groups, corporate areas, contractors, and vendors to ensure appropriate communication and problem resolution..
• Demonstrated ability to develop processes/procedures for new technologies or changing business needs to ensure compliance with all applicable standards, regulations and company requirements.
