Job summary

Senior Engineer at Mimir Engineering in San Diego, CA leads design and analysis of aerospace optical systems from concept through flight hardware. The role involves hands‑on prototyping, FEM sizing, CAD/ drawing creation, and client-facing design reviews for spaceborne and related applications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or another related engineering field.
  • At least 8 years of experience in opto-mechanical design or precision mechanical design.
  • Demonstrated understanding of optical integration techniques and considerations.
  • Ability to assist, independently perform, and/or delegate work tasks.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks (CAD & simulation), Matlab, and Zemax.
  • Prior experience in a consulting environment is a plus.
  • Ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately in an evolving environment.
  • Proactive approach to problem solving in a collaborative work environment.
  • Ability to work extended hours when required, typically no more than 10% additional time.
  • The position may require occasional travel, typically less than 10% of the time and limited to the local region.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop assemblies and sub-systems for a diverse range of applications such as remote sensing, communications, data analytics, defense, etc.
  • Develop innovative technical solutions to meet performance and survivability requirements of hardware
  • Design, build, and test prototypes, flight hardware, and ground support equipment (GSE) as necessary
  • Drive appropriate system sizing and design/selection of components using engineering judgement and detailed knowledge of fundamentals, including the use of classical hand calculations and finite element modeling (FEM)
  • Create detailed engineering documentation (CAD models, drawings, BOMs, reports, instructions, presentations, etc.) as necessary to support project needs
  • Provide expert guidance to clients and other staff members working on difficult technical problems
  • Anticipate future engineering needs and the modifications required to accomplish a technical goal
  • Work on projects independently and/or with a multi-disciplinary team
  • Effectively manage multiple tasks and juggle multiple projects
  • Mentor and assist junior engineers
  • Collaborate with others in the development of project plans, proposals, and schedules
  • Prepare slides for and present in customer design reviews and meetings as required

SENIOR ENGINEER
What you will be doing

As a Senior Engineer at Mimir, your work will have a significant impact across a variety of technical domains. Mimir's customer projects range from instruments enabling quantum computing to optical systems, remote sensing, and laser communication systems for customers in the aerospace and consumer industries. This role will allow you to produce and deliver projects from cradle-to-grave in design, analysis, and AI&T for some of the most recognizable names in commercial space and big tech.

This role offers tremendous potential for career growth. You’ll be working alongside technical experts with decades of experience as system architects developing and building technology demonstrators and bespoke solutions for spaceborne, airborne, and ground-based applications.

Essential Job Functions

Location

This onsite position is based in our San Diego, CA headquarters 5 days per week*, Monday-Friday.

Compensation and Benefits

Senior Engineer annual base salary range: $132,000-$186,000*

*This range represents base salary minimum and maximum. In addition to base pay, Mimir offers a discretionary monthly productivity bonus and a discretionary annual bonus based on company performance.
