Job summary

Mimir Engineering, a precision engineering service provider focusing on aerospace optical systems, seeks a Principal Engineer to lead technical direction and cradle-to-grave delivery for space and commercial programs.

You will mentor engineers, develop assemblies and sub-systems, perform FEM and CAD work, and present in design reviews. Requires 15 years in opto-mechanical design, proficiency with SolidWorks, Matlab and Zemax, U.S. person, and willingness to travel up to 10%.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or related technical discipline.
  • 15 years of experience in opto-mechanical design or other precision mechanical design.
  • Demonstrated understanding of optical integration techniques and considerations.
  • Ability to assist, independently perform, and/or delegate work tasks.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks (CAD & simulation), Matlab, and Zemax.
  • Prior experience in a consulting environment is a plus.
  • Ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately in an evolving environment.
  • Proactive approach to problem solving in a collaborative work environment.
  • Must be a U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident).
  • Ability to work extended hours when required, typically no more than 10% additional time.

Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative technical solutions to meet performance and survivability requirements of hardware.
  • Design, build, and test prototypes, flight hardware, and ground support equipment (GSE) as necessary.
  • Drive appropriate system sizing and design/selection of components using engineering judgement and FEM knowledge.
  • Create detailed engineering documentation (CAD models, drawings, BOMs, reports, etc.).
  • Provide expert guidance to clients and staff on difficult technical problems.
  • Anticipate future engineering needs and needed modifications.
  • Work on projects independently or with a multi-disciplined team.
  • Mentor and assist other engineers.
  • Collaborate on project plans, proposals, and schedules.
  • Prepare slides for and present in customer design reviews and meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

PRINCIPAL ENGINEER
What you will be doing

As a Principal Engineer at Mimir, you will drive technical leadership and subject matter expertise while helping grow the business across a range of customers in the consumer and aerospace sectors.

Mimir's projects typically focus on the development of optical systems, from remote sensing to laser communications. This role will give you the opportunity to develop new clients and to own the delivery ofcustomer programs cradle-to-grave spanning design, analysis, and AI&T for some of the most recognizable names in commercial space and big tech.

This role offers significant ownership of the end-to-end engineering solution for your project work. You’ll be leading technical experts with decades of engineering experience developing and building technology demonstrators and bespoke solutions for spaceborne, airborne, and ground-based applications.

Essential Functions
  • Demonstrated ability to win business by cultivating new and existing customer relationships through depth of knowledge

  • Drive appropriate system sizing and design/selection of components using engineering judgement and detailed knowledge of fundamentals, including the use of classical hand calculations and finite element modeling (FEM)
  • Create detailed engineering documentation (CAD models, drawings, BOMs, reports, instructions, presentations, etc.) as necessary to support project needs
  • Provide expert guidance to clients and other staff members working on difficult technical problems
  • Anticipate future engineering needs and the modifications required to accomplish a technical goal
  • Work on projects independently and/or with a multi-disciplined team
  • Effectively manage multiple tasks and juggle multiple projects
  • Mentor and assist other engineers
  • Collaborate with others in the development of project plans, proposals, and schedules
  • Prepare slides for and present in customer design reviews and meetings as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications and Desired Skills

  • The position may require occasional travel, which is typically less than 10% of the time and limited to the local region. Approved work travel and approved expenses are reimbursable.
Compensation and Benefits

Principal Engineer annual base salary range: $170,000-$230,000

*This range represents base salary minimum and maximum. In addition to base pay, Mimir offers a discretionary monthly productivity bonus and a discretionary annual bonus based on company performance.
