Job summary

Metra is seeking a Road Foreman of Engines in the Chicago area to supervise train and engine crews, coordinate crew assignments, and ensure safe, compliant operations across Metra's lines. The role requires extensive locomotive experience and certification, with responsibilities spanning staffing, investigations, and incident response.

The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of operating rules, federal regulations, and collaboration with local authorities.

Qualifications

• Must be currently working as a Locomotive Engineer or Engineer Supervisor with at least 5 years as a Locomotive Engineer.
• No decertifications in the last 3 years.
• Excellent knowledge of 49-CFR-240 certification.
• Thorough knowledge of operating rules and union contracts.
• Thorough knowledge of electrical, mechanical and air brake functions for diesel locomotives.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and organization skills.
• Operating Rules Certification is required.
• Locomotive Engineering License or Conductor Certification required.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods.
• Good hearing/vision and color vision required.
• Must be willing to travel within Metra's 6-county region.
• Available on-call 24/7/365, including weekends and holidays.
• Supervisory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Supervise district staff, train and engine crews, and clerks; manage daily operations for performance and efficiency.
• Coordinate crew and equipment assignments to use locomotives, cars, and staff efficiently; respond to service needs.
• Ensure compliance with federal regulations, operating and safety rules, and customer service levels.
• Work with local authorities and Metra Police to resume operations after accidents and secure sites.
• Approve time off, coordinate schedules, fill vacancies, and ensure policy compliance.
• Decide staffing, performance evaluations, and disciplinary actions.
• Oversee safety objectives and programs; ensure regulatory compliance.
• Operate locomotives, switchers, and cab cars in emergencies or as needed.
