Job summary

Metra is a railroad employer serving Northeastern Illinois, responsible for training locomotive engineers and related roles within the Transportation Division. The Operations Trainer-ASLE will train and supervise locomotive engineer candidates to ensure their compliance with Metra schedules and FRA rules.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Locomotive Engineers, the Training and Certification Department oversees training, certification, and safety programs.

Qualifications

  • Must have High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of four years of locomotive engineering experience.
  • Good knowledge of FRA 49 CFR 240 and 242 regulations.
  • GCOR and Metra safety rules knowledge.
  • General knowledge of adult learning.
  • Good verbal and written communications.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit for extended periods.
  • Hearing/visual acuity and color vision.
  • Work under indoor/outdoor conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, critique, and evaluate candidate performance using the Locomotive Simulator in a control setting.
  • Provide FRA mandated education and on-the-job training for currently certified locomotive engineers.
  • Conduct safety meetings to reinforce Metra and FRA safety rules.
  • Assist in monitoring the performance of training engineers responsible for candidate engineers.
  • Coordinate day-to-day team activities, assign tasks/projects and monitor performance, with some supervisory responsibilities.
  • Promote safe work practices and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Ensure compliance with safety rules and regulations.
