Job summary

Metra is seeking a Road Foreman of Engines reporting to the Director, Suburban Operations. The role will supervise train and engine crews, coordinate staffing and equipment, and ensure safety and regulatory compliance while maintaining high customer service standards across Metra-operated lines.

Ideal candidates will have a locomotive engineering background, strong communication skills, and a valid license/certification. The position requires on-call availability and travel within Metra’s region.

Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma or GED.
• Current working as a Locomotive Engineer or Engineer Supervisor with at least five years as a Locomotive Engineer.
• No decertifications in the last three years.
• Excellent knowledge of 49-CFR-240 certification.
• Thorough knowledge of operating rules and union contracts.
• Thorough knowledge of electrical, mechanical and air brake functions for diesel locomotives.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
• Operating Rules Certification required.
• Locomotive Engineering License or Conductor Certification required.
• Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

• Supervise district staff, train and engine crews, and clerks; manage daily operations for optimal performance and efficiency.
• Coordinate crew and equipment assignments to meet service needs and disruptions.
• Ensure compliance with federal regulations, operating and safety rules, and customer service standards.
• Oversee investigations and time/mileage claims in accordance with labor agreements.
• Work with local authorities and transit agencies to resume operations after incidents.
