The position

The Senior Manager, Energy Markets will report to the Director of Power Procurement to fully support STACK’s power & natural gas procurement, energy sustainability goals and alternative generation activities. The Energy Market Manager will analyze market trends, provide support in the negotiation of energy and natural gas contracts and utility interconnections; manage our energy, natural gas and renewable contracts; research new power generation solutions; serve as subject matter expert for natural gas procurement, scheduling and transmission; and ensure cost-effective energy supply that meets STACK’s sustainability goals.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the commercial aspects of natural gas procurement, including natural gas procurement strategies, transmission rights and scheduling. A background in some or all of the following areas would also be highly beneficial: energy market analysis, power procurement, energy policy, deregulated and regulated energy markets, regional transmission organizations, independent system operators, public utilities commissions, electricity rate design, wholesale energy markets, and utility tariffs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Director of Power Procurement on all aspects of natural gas procurement activities.
  • Analyze and forecast electricity consumption needs for data center facilities to develop energy strategies.
  • Research and monitor energy and natural gas markets to identify trends, price fluctuations, and opportunities for cost savings.
  • Support the negotiation and management of energy contracts with utilities and energy providers.
  • Collaborate with finance, accounting and operations teams to develop and manage budgets related to energy and renewable procurement.
  • Evaluate and recommend energy procurement options, including fixed-price, index-based, and renewable energy contracts.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with energy suppliers, brokers, and consultants.
  • Monitor and report on energy procurement performance, including cost savings, contract compliance, electric tariffs and energy market conditions.
  • Support sustainability initiatives by exploring and integrating renewable energy options and renewable energy certificates.
  • Support alternative generation and demand response projects.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on energy activities and performance for senior leadership and end users.
  • Participate in energy trade association meetings and assist in the development of energy policy strategy & positions.
  • Collaborate with finance, construction, design and engineering, sales, legal, tax, and consultative resources.
  • Proficiency in energy procurement software and tools, and strong Excel skills for data analysis and PowerPoint presentation skills. Tableau or Power BI expertise would also be beneficial.
  • Aid in the preparation of business cases and recommendations for leadership approval.
  • Assist with process improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree in energy, business, engineering, finance, economics or other technical discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of prior energy or natural gas industry experience, ideally in procurement, trading, policy, regulation or a similar role.
  • Strong understanding of energy & natural gas markets, pricing structures, and procurement strategies.
  • Experience negotiating natural gas or energy contracts.
  • Strong analytical, detail-oriented, creative thinking, and communication skills
  • Comfort creating processes and implementing strategies and procedures that serve an organization.
  • Ability to execute, process, and prioritize tasks with minimal-to-no supervision.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate with internal staff, external consultants, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office product suite
  • Any STACK locations: Denver, San Francisco, Calgary, Toronto, Chicago, Dallas, New Albany, Northern Virginia, Phoenix, Portland, Silicon Valley.
  • Travel up to 20% (US and Canada)
  • $150k - $180k + 10% bonus
