Own the control systems that keep the grid running.
This is the senior-most engineering seat on an electric utility's Energy Management Systems team. You'll lead the EMS, SCADA, AGC, ICCP and historian platforms behind a Bulk Electric System that runs 24x7. You'll own this environment, not just support it.
Why this role stands out
- Top-of-ladder technical ownership: lead EMS and historian upgrades, design AGC, and represent the utility to neighboring utilities on ICCP
- Real breadth: cross-train across every focus area (GMS, EAS, Cyber-Infrastructure) while staying hands-on with custom application development
- Leadership without losing the technical work: mentor engineers, lead vendor and procurement strategy, and shape engineering standards and OT modernization
- Stability and strong pay: $130,666 to $228,062, in mission-critical infrastructure built to last
What you'll be doing
- Leading maintenance, configuration, and upgrades of the EMS and data historian, including operator displays and visualizations
- Rebuilding substation configurations from engineering documentation, modeling EMS changes, and running point-to-point verification with the controls vendor
- Designing, configuring, and maintaining Automatic Generation Control
- Administering ICCP changes with other utilities and modeling configuration impacts
- Leading diagnosis of communications, telemetry, and data issues using Wireshark and similar tools
- Owning NERC CIP compliance work: failover documentation, change control, patch management, firmware upgrades, security testing, and SQL-based compliance evidence
- Leading procurement and contract management, and onboarding vendors and contractors
- Mentoring less experienced engineers and building SOPs, troubleshooting guides, and best practices
What we're looking for
- 10+ years maintaining applications that provide 24x7 support of critical operations
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Technology, or MIS, or two additional years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree
- Ability to meet and maintain NERC CIP access eligibility, including a Personnel Risk Assessment and background check
- Knowledge of NERC standards and electrical engineering industry standards
- Software engineering depth: program design, code development, and client-server and object-oriented patterns
- Strong problem-solving, communication, and time management skills
- Washington State EIT or a Professional Engineer license
- Electric utility operations experience with real-time EMS or SCADA systems
- Supervisory or team lead experience
The salary range is $130,666 to $228,062 per year.
Work is primarily office-based, with possible partial hybrid eligibility and 8, 9, or 10 hour shifts. Some field work may require operating a vehicle.
