LHH Recruitment Solutions is seeking a Senior Embedded Systems Engineer in the Milwaukee metro area to design, develop, integrate, and support embedded systems used in complex environments. The position combines hands‑on software development with system‑level troubleshooting and cross‑functional collaboration, with strong C/C++ expertise and hardware interaction.

The role is onsite in the Northwest suburbs with occasional travel, offering technical leadership and mentorship to other engineers

Qualifications

• 6+ years of professional experience developing embedded systems or firmware.
• Advanced programming experience with C and/or C++.
• Strong understanding of embedded software architecture and real‑time operating systems.
• Experience developing or working with low‑level drivers and hardware interfaces.
• Hands‑on experience with hardware bring‑up and board‑level troubleshooting.
• Experience diagnosing issues that cross software and hardware boundaries.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded software and firmware.
• Lead technical design efforts involving multiple hardware and software components.
• Contribute to embedded system architecture and longer‑term technical direction.
• Diagnose challenging issues involving firmware, electronics, communications, and system integration.
• Support hardware bring‑up, validation, testing, and troubleshooting.
• Read and interpret electrical schematics and PCB‑related documentation.
• Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, software, quality, manufacturing, and other engineering teams.
• Establish and promote strong practices around coding, testing, documentation, and design.
• Perform root‑cause analysis using appropriate hardware and software debugging techniques.
• Mentor less‑experienced engineers and provide technical guidance on development and troubleshooting.
• Evaluate technologies and engineering approaches that could improve reliability, performance, maintainability, or security.
• Identify technical risks and provide input into project planning and engineering priorities.
• Create technical documentation, specifications, design materials, and engineering recommendations.
• Communicate project progress, technical challenges, risks, and resource considerations to stakeholders.
• Participate in technical discussions with customers, including requirements gathering, solution reviews, testing, and troubleshooting.
• Adapt quickly when urgent technical or business priorities arise.
• Travel occasionally for customer or project‑related needs.
