Job summary

Wonder is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join our backend team and build the brains of our automated restaurant systems. You’ll design and extend real-time distributed services using Elixir and Phoenix, interfacing cloud infrastructure with on-site robotics and frontend apps.

You will collaborate with product, design, and operations peers, mentor engineers, and help ensure reliability and performance in production environments across multiple distributed systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience building highly concurrent, distributed systems and shipping them to production.
• Proficiency in Elixir, including OTP, and the Phoenix framework.
• Proficiency with PostgreSQL and relational database design.
• Experience designing, building, and consuming WebSocket events, REST APIs, webhooks, and other message-based systems.
• Experience designing and deploying infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code. We use Terraform.
• A pragmatic approach to problem solving and the ability to troubleshoot complex technical obstacles.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to facilitate technical discussions with product, design, and operations partners.

Responsibilities

• Orchestrate distributed systems design for real-time production environments.
• Bridge cloud and on-premise components with event-driven architectures and REST/WebSocket interfaces.
• Maintain high reliability and performance of live production systems.
• Guide feature development from concept to deployment, balancing product requirements and technical tradeoffs.
• Mentor other engineers and promote best practices across the team.
• Collaborate with cross-functional partners to align technical outcomes with business goals.
