Job summary

BACKBONE is seeking a Senior Electronics Hardware Engineer (m/f/d) in Vienna. You will develop electronic circuits and assemblies from concept to demonstrator, create schematics and PCB layouts with Altium Designer and KiCad, and select components while evaluating new technologies.

The role involves hands-on prototyping, measurements, and close collaboration with firmware, software, and mechanical teams to deliver robust hardware solutions.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related STEM field with hardware focus.

Your Role

• Develop electronic circuits and assemblies for research, pre-development, and prototype projects — from initial concept through to a fully functional demonstrator.
• Create schematics and PCB layouts using Altium Designer and/or KiCad.
• Select and evaluate components, technologies, and electronic components.
• Build, commission, and hands-on debug prototypes and experimental circuits.
• Perform measurements, fault analysis, and systematic hardware optimization.
• Work closely with firmware, software, mechanical, and systems engineering teams, while providing support and technical expertise to production development.
• Evaluate new technologies and independently implement proof-of-concepts and rapid prototypes.

Your Profile

• Completed university degree (University of Applied Sciences/FH or Technical University/TU) in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Communications Engineering, Information Technology, Mechatronics, or a comparable STEM field, with a focus on electronics and hardware development.
• 5+ years of professional experience in electronics/hardware development, ideally in R&D, pre-development, or prototyping within an industrial environment.
• Solid experience in circuit and PCB design, with strong proficiency in Altium Designer and/or KiCad.
• Very good knowledge of analog and digital circuit design, as well as experience with microcontrollers and common interfaces.
• Ideally, experience with embedded programming/firmware modifications as well as RF/high-frequency layout and design.
• Strong analytical thinking and a systems-oriented approach.
• Experience commissioning, measuring, and debugging electronic assemblies, with confident use of standard laboratory test and measurement equipment.
• Independent, structured, and solution-oriented working style, with the ability to explore new technical areas and develop robust solutions from unclear or incomplete requirements.
• Strong hands-on mentality and enthusiasm for building, modifying, measuring, and troubleshooting hardware directly on prototypes.
• Very good German and English skills.
• Team player with high motivation and commitment.
• Willingness to travel.
