Job summary

CenterPoint Energy is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer Power Quality in Houston to provide expert support for transmission, substation, and distribution systems. You will act as SME for internal initiatives and evaluations, guiding projects from concept through completion.

The role emphasizes delivering safe, reliable electric service, cost-effective solutions, and collaboration with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment. A PE license and Texas experience are preferred.

Qualifications

• Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
• Professional Engineer license in the State of Texas required or actively pursuing Texas licensure may substitute for degree.

Responsibilities

• Manages engineering projects and studies to meet timelines and cost targets.
• Resolves problems during engineering or construction projects using best practices.
• Collaborates with technical and non-technical staff to share information and plan activities.
• Prepares new or revised engineering specifications to support efficiency improvements.
• Represents the division at inter-departmental and customer meetings.
• Incorporates safety into designs per internal standards and external requirements.
• Produces cost estimates and analyses for projects related to electric systems.
• Performs design calculations and electrical system studies with minimal supervision.
• Researches and tests electrical materials, equipment, and networks.
• Develops design options for structures, systems and components.
• Reviews/approves construction packages including maps and drawings.

Job Summary

Provides engineering technical support associated with the design, analysis, construction, and operations of CenterPoint Energy’s overhead and underground transmission, substation and distribution systems. Serves as an subject matter expert (SME) for various internal initiatives and evaluations.

Essential Functions

• Manages basic, standard, or complex engineering projects and studies, ensuring completion by established timeline and at a reasonable cost.
• Resolves problems during engineering or construction projects to develop solutions based on engineering best practices.
• Collaborates with technical and non-technical personnel to gather and exchange information, resolve issues, plan activities, and meet or exceed engineering objectives.
• Prepares new or revised engineering and/or technical specifications for supporting process efficiency or improvement.
• Represents the division at inter-departmental and customer meetings.
• Builds safety into the electric transmission system, substation, or distribution system by ensuring design adherence to applicable internal standards and procedures and external requirements (e.g. NESC, ANSI, ASTM, IEEE, ERCOT, NERC, etc).
• Prepares cost estimates and cost analyses for projects associated with the electric system.
• Performs accurate engineering design calculations and analysis.
• Performs electrical system studies accurately with minimal supervision.
• Researches, devises and tests electrical material, equipment, systems and networks.
• Develops design options or recommendations for structures, systems and components.
• Reviews and evaluates existing and new technology, engineering methods and operating philosophies for potential system improvement.
• Produces technical reports to document analysis results and engineering recommendations.
• Reviews and sometimes prepares construction packages, including maps, bills of materials, drawings and work orders.

Education Description

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.

A Professional Engineer license in the State of Texas is required or another state and active pursuit of a license in Texas can be substituted for the degree.

Experience

Requires a minimum of four (4) years Engineering experience. Preferably two (2) years of utility or power engineering experience.

Physical Requirements

• Able to certify and use personal protective equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hardhat, gloves, protective footwear and earplugs on a daily basis.
• Able to demonstrate and apply the manual dexterity to operate a personal computer and common office equipment.
• Able to communicate either written and verbal communications either in person or through technical equipment such as telephone.
• Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
• Able to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time.

Working Conditions

• Required to participate in CenterPoint Energy's Emergency Operation Plan (EOP).
• Able to operate a motor vehicle and drive a motor vehicle daily or for extended time periods, in a safe manner.
• Able to travel occasionally overnight.
• Able to work in a fast-paced environment.
• Able to work indoors in an office environment and outdoors with occasional exposure to all weather conditions, equipment, and noise when at field installation sites.
