Job summary

CenterPoint Energy seeks an experienced Transmission Line Design engineer to design and analyze the transmission system and support substation and distribution projects. You will evaluate materials, test performance, and coordinate research and development efforts with vendors and cross-functional teams.

The role requires a BS in engineering and a Texas PE license, with at least five years of relevant design and field experience.

Qualifications

  • Requires a BS in Electrical/Civil/Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer license in the State of Texas.
  • Minimum 5 years of Transmission Line Design experience.
  • Experience designing transmission facilities and preparing SAP work orders.
  • Ability to interpret codes (NESC, ASCE, AEIC, IEEE) and follow safety practices.
  • Proficient with SAP, GIS and engineering software.

Responsibilities

  • Design transmission facilities and prepare project cost estimates and SAP work orders.
  • Evaluate material performance considering environment, degradation and construction methods.
  • Coordinate R&D proposals, bids and contract terms.
  • Perform field inspections and site visits as needed.
  • Interface with inspectors, engineers, and management on transmission projects.
  • Evaluate new technologies to improve the electric system.
  • Support yearly Capital budget preparation.

Job Summary

Responsible for the design and analysis of the transmission system with regard to reliability, material adequacy, inspection technologies, and replacement of facilities in support of transmission, substation, telecommunication, and distribution projects.

Essential Functions
  • Design transmission facilities, prepare project cost estimates, PLS-CADD modeling, and prepare SAP work orders in support of transmission, substation, telecommunication, and distribution capital projects.
  • Evaluate material performance as affected by environmental considerations, material degradation, and construction methods. Coordinate material testing and failure analysis.
  • Recommend and/or coordinate research and development (R&D) projects including preparing requests for proposals (RFP) and cost budgets, evaluating contractor bids, and reviewing contract terms and conditions.
  • Coordinate and/or perform field inspections related to engineering support requests. This may include walking, driving a 4WD truck or all-terrain vehicle (ATV), or flying in a helicopter in conjunction with the use of laptop PC's, binoculars, and photographic or video equipment.
  • Interface with inspectors, engineers, construction personnel, warehousing personnel, purchasing agents, consultants, vendors, and management regarding transmission inspection, reliability, and rehabilitation.
  • Evaluate new technologies that will enhance the electric system.
  • Support the preparation of yearly Capital budgets.
  • Serve as a department representative on task forces, committees, and cross-functional teams and serve as a subject matter expert and represent CenterPoint Energy on external committees, conferences, and other groups.
Education Description
  • Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering/Civil Engineering/Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Professional Engineer license in the State of Texas.
Experience
  • Requires a minimum of 5 years of Transmission Line Design experience.
  • Design transmission facilities, prepare project cost estimates, PLS-CADD modeling, and prepare SAP work orders in support of transmission, substation, telecommunication, and distribution capital projects.

  • Able to interpret and apply all applicable codes (e.g. NESC, ASCE, AEIC, IEEE, etc.).
  • Able to understand and follow electric safety principals and work safely around energized equipment and environments where CNP facilities are located.
  • Able to use mathematics, including trigonometry and calculus, to complete complex engineering design calculations and relate mathematical solutions to actual utility situations.
  • Able to interpret and analyze drawings and technical documents.
  • Able to apply knowledge of electrical/civil theory and system operations to daily decisions.
  • Able to use SAP, G.I.S., and technical engineering applications software.
Physical Requirements
  • Able to certify and use personal protective equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hardhat, gloves, protective footwear and earplugs on a daily basis.
  • Able to demonstrate and apply the manual dexterity to operate a personal computer and common office equipment.
  • Able to communicate either written and verbal communications either in person or through technical equipment such as telephone.
  • Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a minimal amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Able to sit, stand or walk for long periods of time.
Working Conditions
  • Required to participate in CenterPoint Energy's Emergency Operation Plan (EOP).
  • Able to operate a motor vehicle and drive a motor vehicle daily or for extended time periods, in a safe manner.
  • Able to travel occasionally overnight.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Able to work indoors in an office environment and outdoors with occasional exposure to all weather conditions, equipment, and noise when at field installation sites.
