Job summary

WSP is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer (Generation) to join our Power & Energy team on a nationwide basis, with preference for select offices. The role focuses on leading electrical design for generation projects, supporting from preliminary design through commissioning, and coordinating with multi-discipline teams.

Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 10+ years of post-education experience as a power engineer delivering design for power generation capital projects.
  • Professional Engineer license required (multi-state preferred).
  • Strong proficiency with power engineering principles, practices, and design/build for permitting and project work.
  • Experience with Combined Cycle, Simple Cycle gas turbines, or HRSG.
  • Experience coordinating with mechanical and civil structural engineers.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical codes (IEEE, NEC, NEMA, IEC).
  • Proficient in technical calculations and interpreting plans against regulations.
  • Experience with inspections and investigations of construction/design of facilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Produce, coordinate, review and/or approve electrical design plans for complex power plant projects.
  • Apply high‑level electrical engineering techniques across all project phases from design to commissioning and record drawings.
  • Support generation project scoping, budgeting, and proposals.
  • Oversee development of power plant electrical drawings (Onelines, Schematics, Bus Duct layouts).
  • Oversee development of equipment specifications for power and control systems.
  • Lead large electrical engineering projects with budgets and resource tracking.
  • Assist with permit applications and inspections to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Meet with clients, vendors, and subcontractors to discuss project status.
  • Ensure reports and presentations clearly communicate findings and recommendations.
  • Maintain high quality and responsiveness to client requirements.
  • Develop a client base for high-level electrical engineering services.
  • Mentor staff for growth and development.

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Senior Electrical Engineer (Generation) to join our Power & Energy team.

This is a nationwide search and any WSP office will be considered, with preference for our Power Generation focused offices: Boise, ID; Seattle, WA; Houston, TX; Mount Laurel, NJ; Oradell, NJ; Atlanta, GA.

The candidate will be involved in projects with our Thermal Generation Team in the Power & Energy Division.

Provides subject matter technical support and leadership for multi‑site/phase due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, improvement, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale projects in the public and private sector. Tasks include the research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, power distribution, power regulation, renewable energy, as well as protection and control systems in a wide variety of contexts (utilities, transportation, building, and Federal, State, and local government projects). Provides situational guidance to PMs and managers that address current and future challenges, and that documentation and recommendations accurately account for and address risk, innovation, and future‑ready opportunities. Provides leadership with ensuring that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Your Impact
  • Produce, coordinate, review and/or approve electrical design plans for complex power plant projects
  • Apply high‑level electrical engineering techniques to support all project phases, all the way from preliminary design, to commissioning support and record drawings.
  • Support generation project scoping, budgeting, and proposals.
  • Oversee the development of power plant electrical drawings (Onelines, Breaker Control Schematics, Bus Duct Layouts, Equipment Elevations, Cable Schedules, etc.)
  • Oversee the development of equipment specifications (i.e. power and control cables, unit auxiliary transformers, isolated phase bus ducts, generator circuit breakers, power distribution centers, etc.).
  • Lead larger‑scale electrical engineering projects ensuring contributors know what they are required to do and by when, preparing and overseeing relevant project budgets, tracking hours and expenses, ensuring satisfactory work quality.
  • Assist with engineering review of permit applications, engineering design plans and specifications, standby plans and engineering contracts, and periodic construction inspections, to ensure that they comply with applicable state and/or federal regulations and sound engineering practice and standards.
  • Meet with client, vendor, and/or subcontractor personnel to discuss project status. Explaining engineering decisions and compromises.
  • Ensure technical reports and presentations effectively explain research, findings, and recommendations.
  • Maintain a high level of quality and responsiveness to client requirements in alignment with applicable standards.
  • Develop a client base for providing high level electrical engineering services including identifying additional business development opportunities.
  • Mentor staff to support their growth and professional development.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 10+ years of relevant post education experience as a power engineer providing design deliverables for capital projects in power generation.
  • Professional Engineer license required (multiple states preferred).
  • Highly proficient with power engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, and the application to permitting and project work‑related issues.
  • Highly proficient with power plant infrastructure design involving Combined Cycle and Simple Cycle Gas Turbines or Heat Recovery Steam Generators.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and program/construction management; including comprehensive experience in coordinating with engineers in adjacent disciplines such as mechanical and civil structural engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements (IEEE, NEC, NEMA, IEC, etc).
  • Highly proficient with making technical computations and calculations involving the application of engineering principles, understanding plans and specifications, and making factual comparisons to the appropriate regulations.
  • Experience with planning and conducting inspections and investigations on various aspects of the construction and design of facilities or structures, applying applicable regulations and policies
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others
