We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to support the development and execution of utility-scale renewable energy projects, including solar, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and wind.
This individual will oversee substation and transmission line design, electrical studies, engineering calculations, and automation systems for medium- and high-voltage infrastructure. The role will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and project stakeholders to ensure reliable, efficient, and compliant electrical designs throughout project development, construction, commissioning, and operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee substation, transmission line, and electrical collection system designs for utility-scale renewable energy projects.
- Develop and review substation layouts, grounding plans, cable and conduit plans, auxiliary AC/DC power distribution diagrams, cable schedules, bills of materials, and related engineering deliverables.
- Support the design of air-insulated substations (AIS) and gas-insulated substations (GIS), including medium- and high-voltage applications.
- Review engineering design packages, project specifications, and design basis documentation while coordinating with external engineering contractors.
- Oversee electrical studies and calculations, including short-circuit analysis, protection coordination, arc flash, ampacity, reactive power compensation, harmonic analysis, and insulation coordination.
- Provide technical support for operating renewable energy assets, including substations, transmission lines, and collection systems.
- Support project commissioning, energization, and the development and maintenance of technical documentation.
- Review maintenance records, recommend corrective actions, and support compliance with applicable NERC standards.
- Participate in root cause analyses, lessons-learned reviews, and investigations involving equipment misoperations and safety-related events.
- Review and improve commissioning, maintenance, and standard operating procedures.
- Develop improvement projects, including scopes of work, budgets, schedules, and requests for proposals.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to ensure engineering deliverables meet project requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
- 7+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in at least one U.S. state.
- Legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.
- Strong technical knowledge of medium- and high-voltage substation equipment, relay protection systems, electrical collection systems, transmission design, and operations.
- Experience with industry-standard electrical engineering software, including ETAP, CYMCAP, and WinIGS.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and project software tools.
- Familiarity with SEL equipment and substation components, including capacitor banks, transformer load tap changers, circuit breakers, and disconnect switches.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting large-scale utility solar and wind projects.
- Experience establishing or supporting high-voltage field services.
- Familiarity with CDEGS, EMTP, PSS/E, PSCAD, or similar electrical engineering software.
- Experience supporting renewable energy projects through design, construction, commissioning, and operations.
