Job summary

Orbion Space Technology Inc in Houghton, MI seeks a Senior Electrical Engineer to lead the design and development of spacecraft electronics hardware for propulsion systems. You will mentor engineers, oversee lifecycle activities from concept through test, and collaborate with manufacturing and test teams to ensure robust, flight-ready designs.

The role requires hands-on experience with analog, digital/FPGA, and power electronics, plus strong PCB and circuit simulation skills.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of hardware design for space/high-reliability applications with team leadership experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead conceptual design and requirements for spacecraft electronics.
  • Provide technical leadership across product lifecycle including part selection and test.
  • Mentor engineers in requirements, documentation, design control, testing, and manufacturing support.
  • Develop analyses for parts stress, thermal, radiation effects, and vibroacoustic.
  • Drive risk-reduction, acceptance, and qualification test campaigns.
  • Create and review test plans, procedures, and electrical schematics.
  • Incorporate DFM/DFT principles in new designs and scaling production.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing on fixtures and test equipment.
  • Lead product failure investigations and drive necessary design changes.
  • Occasional travel (about 10%).

Description

The Senior Electrical Engineer will work with Orbion’s world- class electrical R&D team, contract manufacturing partners, manufacturing, and test engineering teams to support current products and develop state of the air electronics hardware for spacecraft electric propulsion systems as well as oversee and provide guidance for the work of other engineers on the team.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and be responsible for conceptual design, architecture trades, and requirements for formulation for novel spacecraft electronics
  • Create, support, and be the technical lead for electrical designs throughout entire product lifecycle including part selection, schematic capture, board layout, manufacture, and test
  • Mentor other engineers on the team in all aspects of electrical engineering including requirements definition, documentation, design control, problem solving, laboratory testing and manufacturing support
  • Collaborate with analysts to develop parts stress, thermal, radiation effects, and vibroacoustic analyses for your designs
  • Drive the development, planning, and execution of risk-reduction, acceptance, and qualification test campaigns
  • Create and review documentation (e.g. test plans, test procedures, work instructions, electrical schematics)
  • Incorporate Design-for-Manufacture (DFM) or Design-For-Test (DFT) principles as you guide new designs through development, first article builds, and volume-production
  • Utilize manufacturing test data and trends to drive improved design requirements
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing on the development and procurement of special fixturing or test equipment to support manufacturing and test operations
  • Lead product failure investigations in an integrated product team environment driving necessary changes to design, manufacturing, or test
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
  • Must meet definition of a US Person
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or similar from an ABET accredited program
  • 3+ years’ experience developing electronic hardware for space, aerospace, automotive, or similar high-reliability applications including some experience as the technical leader of a team
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a fast-paced team environment with minimal supervision
  • Strong hands- on development experience with at least two of the following: analog circuit design (filters, amplifiers, etc.), digital/FPGA design, power electronics (switching converters, linear regulators, magnetics, etc.), or digital peripherals (memory arrays, ADCs, DACs, etc.)
  • Demonstrated proficiency using PCB design software (e.g. Altium) and circuit simulation tools (e.g. SPICE)
  • Proficiency with typical electrical test equipment - DMMs, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, loads, etc.
  • Demonstrated hands- on electronics skills including soldering, rework, polymerics, or cable/harness fab
  • Familiarity with the electrical engineering product lifecycle, ranging from requirements development through parts selection, design, manufacture, test, and operations
  • Willingness to travel on occasion (10%)
Preferred Qualifications
  • 8+ years’ experience developing electronic hardware for space, aerospace, automotive, or similar high-reliability applications
  • Advanced technical degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or similar
  • Experience as the technical leader in an electronic product development organization for multiple product development programs
  • Experience mentoring and leading junior engineers. This would include leading and reviewing product development, documentation, laboratory testing, design reviews, and assigning day- to- day tasks
  • Experience with qualification and acceptance testing of electronics for extreme environments per MIL-STD-810 (e.g. TVAC, shock, vibe, etc.)
  • Experience with space radiation effects on electronics, parts selection, shielding tradeoffs, TID, SEE, SEL, SEU, and displacement damage
  • Experience with EMI-EMC design principles and testing (e.g. MIL-STD-461)
  • Experience with EEE Parts & Reliability Engineering, which may include: high- reliability part selection, derating, up screening, reliability analysis, and familiarity with industry standards/best practices such as EEE-INST-002, MIL-HDBK-217, AEC-QXXX, etc.
  • Familiarity with Design-For-Manufacture (DFM) or Design-For-Test (DFT) principles
  • Expertise with NASA or IPC workmanship standards such as IPC J-STD-001, NASA-STD-8739.X, or WHMA-A-620
  • Experience designing electronics for spaceflight or other high-reliability applications, including familiarity with relevant standards and practices such as ECSS standards, and environmental qualification guidance such as NASA GEVS/GSFC-STD-7000
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of standing on concrete surfaces and at times, sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift/carry up to 40 pounds loads from floor level to chest level
  • Frequently move about office to access file cabinets, inventory, office machinery, etc.
  • Manual dexterity to evaluate, install, and modify equipment
  • Fine motor skills required for minute adjustments or counting small items
