Job description

If you are a highly skilled Senior Electrical Design Engineer, join our Research & Development team in Houston, Texas, focused on Gas Chromatograph (GC) instrumentation. In this role, you will own the design, development, and testing of sophisticated electrical and electronic systems for high-precision analytical instruments. The ideal candidate brings deep knowledge in analog and digital circuit design, with experience in developing precision control systems, integrating sensors and detectors, and supporting the next generation of GC platforms. You will collaborate closely with multi-functional teams, including engineering, marketing, operations, supply chain, manufacturing, customer support, and field service to drive new product development and enhancements to existing products. In This Role, Your Responsibilities Will Be:

  • Own the design and development of analog/digital circuits, PCBs, and embedded systems for Gas Chromatograph (GC) instrumentation.
  • Drive sophisticated design initiatives for new products and major redesigns, ensuring engineering rigor and risk mitigation.
  • Apply technical expertise to develop innovative solutions and new technologies with moderate technical risk.
  • Collaborate closely with multi-functional teams (manufacturing, purchasing, marketing, vendors, and customers) to ensure seamless system integration.
  • Serve as a project technical lead, coordinating engineering activities and communicating project status and challenges.
  • Conduct simulations and PCB layout using tools like Altium Designer.
  • Support projects from concept through prototyping, validation, regulatory compliance, and manufacturing transfer.
  • Ensure all designs and documentation meet internal quality standards and external regulatory requirements (e.g., EMC, RoHS, CE, UL, CSA, ATEX).

Who You Are:

You experiment with a wide range of existing technologies while applying new and emerging options that can enhance organizational outcomes. You facilitate an open dialogue with a wide variety of contributors and stakeholders. You pursue everything with energy, drive, and the need to finish.

For This Role, You Will Need:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in electrical design, preferably within analytical instrumentation, laboratory equipment, or precision electronics.
  • Strong expertise in crafting sophisticated analog and digital circuits and systems, including low-noise electronics and precision control.
  • Proficient in multi-layer PCB layout and design, with preferred experience using Altium Designer.
  • Solid understanding of PCB thermal management, EMC/EMI compliance, and mitigation techniques.
  • Experience with temperature controllers, microcontrollers, data acquisition systems, and embedded systems, including firmware-hardware integration.
  • Familiarity with discrete component selection and verification, and communication protocols such as QSPI, SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, Ethernet (including PHY), USB, PCIe, and LPDDR4.
  • Proven problem-solving skills, with experience debugging and validating sophisticated electrical systems.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% internationally and domestically.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications That Set You Apart:
  • Understanding of high-gain transimpedance amplifier design
  • Knowledge of IPC standards related to PCB manufacturing
  • Exposure to Linux-based systems and open-source software solutions
  • Understanding of chemical or analytical instrumentation principles, especially gas chromatography, is a strong plus.
