Job summary

Sterling Steel Company, a Leggett & Platt business, seeks an Electrical Controls Engineer to join the Rod Mill Electrical team in Sterling, IL. You will lead electrical process improvements, troubleshoot complex automation, and mentor the controls staff to ensure safe, high‑quality production.

You will be responsible for PLC programming, HMI development, and maintaining electrical systems across 480V/240V/120V power, with on‑site presence and occasional after‑hours support.

Qualifications

• 5+ years heavy industrial electrical & electronics experience.
• 2-5 years leadership experience.
• Strong PLC programming experience with Step7, PCS7, WinCC, and TIA.
• Proficiency with Siemens PLCs and HMIs.
• Ability to read electrical schematics and process instrumentation manuals.
• On-site role with after-hours on-call as needed.

Responsibilities

• Monitor electrical processes that affect operation of Rod Mill and quality of product.
• Troubleshoot to find cause of electrical problems (equipment, electrical, motors, PLC…) and implement solution for correction to decrease downtime.
• Take readings and predict source of problems.
• Manage drives program for backup and restore.
• Oversee Electrical Supervisor & department.
• Educate employees on what we do as well as how and why we do it.
• Provide training and coaching of electrical personnel.
• Audit and update SJPs and Safety processes.
