Job summary

Formation Bio is seeking a Senior or Principal Data Scientist for the EHR AI team to build models using real-world data (EHR, claims, notes, imaging, and biobank-scale data). You will predict disease progression and treatment response, turning results into real-world evidence that informs drug acquisition and trial design.

This hands-on role requires training models, defining cohorts, and communicating results to Business Development and R&D within a hybrid NYC/Boston environment.

Qualifications

• PhD in computer science, biomedical informatics, statistics, epidemiology, or related quantitative field (required).
• 2+ years of industry or research experience building ML models on EHR data with real-world data; demonstrated results.
• Strong Python and deep learning expertise; familiarity with data lakes and distributed compute for large clinical data sets.
• High comfort with LLMs, including coding agents, as part of daily work.
• Knowledge of EHR data structures, clinical vocabularies, and OMOP CDM; experience with ICD-10, SNOMED CT, LOINC, RxNorm.
• Ability to explain technical results clearly to scientific and non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Build, train, and validate predictive models on longitudinal EHR and claims data.
• Benchmark EHR foundation models for patient representation against baselines.
• Define and validate computable phenotypes and cohorts using OMOP CDM and vocabularies.
• Apply causal methods such as target trial emulation alongside predictive models.
• Answer EHR/RWE questions from Business Development and R&D on timelines with clear uncertainty statements.
• Write reproducible, reviewed code and collaborate with Engineering and Product.
• Principal level: lead a modeling workstream end to end and mentor other scientists.
