Fully in-person position based in New York City starting September 1st, 2025

I. Brief Presentation

Villa Albertine is an institution of the French Embassy in the United States, supported by the French government and Albertine Foundation. Its mission is to strengthen ties between the United States, France and the French-speaking world through culture and education.Present in 10 major US cities –– Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Washington, DC –– it is headquartered in New York’s historic Payne Whitney Mansion on Fifth Avenue.

Under the supervision of the Director of the Books and Ideas Department at Villa Albertine, the Editorial Director develops a wide range of media content designed to extend and enrich the institution’s activities, with a particular focus on intellectual exchange and French-American dialogue. They contribute to the promotion of Villa Albertine’s residency program and help build partnerships with French and American stakeholders, with the aim of fostering new spaces for cultural and intellectual dialogue between France and the United States.

II. Job Description

The Editorial Director of Villa Albertine is responsible for the following activities:

In close collaboration with the Communications Department and the Residencies Department,developing Villa Albertine’s editorial strategy. This includes designing innovative and engaging formats, content, and partnerships (across media and social platforms) that amplify and deepen the institution’s activities.

Overseeing editorial content across both print and digital platforms, including:

  • Coordinating the annual publication ofStates, Villa Albertine’s print magazine, and potential special editions. This entails defining the editorial vision, managing internal and external contributions, liaising with service providers, and supervising the funding process.
  • Supervising the production of bilingual content—print and digital (articles, interviews, podcasts, and videos)—that highlights key issues in the French-American relationship, with a particular emphasis on cultural and intellectual exchange, emerging trends in the French and American art scenes, and Villa Albertine’s initiatives, especially its residency program.

Developing strategic partnershipswith French and American media, as well as with key academic and publishing stakeholders, to foster and promote Franco-American cultural dialogue:

  • Managing the partnership with Éditions du Seuil for theAlbertinecollection, which features works by former Villa Albertine residents, and coordinating potential collaborations with other publishing houses.
  • Establishing partnerships with U.S.-based media outlets to support the visibility and promotion of Francophone literature—both fiction and nonfiction—published in the United States.

I. Professional experience and skills

  • Proven editorial and writing skills, with the ability to manage both print and digital content production.
  • Strong interest in cultural affairs, international exchange, and intellectual debate, particularly within the French-American context.
  • Ability to develop and implement innovative editorial strategies in collaboration with communications teams.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills; experience in coordinating publications and working with external contributors and service providers.
  • Journalistic experience preferred, particularly in cultural or international reporting.

II. Language Requirements

  • Fluent in English at a native level, proficient in French.

III. Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (including SharePoint)
  • Experience with contact management tools appreciated
  • Social networking skills (sense of trends)

  • This is a 100% in-person position based in New York City at the Institut Français des Etats-Unis – Villa Albertine, 972 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10075
  • At Will employment with a 6-month trial period.
  • Occasional availability for events on weekends and in the evenings.
  • Gross Salary: 8,311USD/month, full-time basis with a monthly transportation allowance of $120.
