Morning Brew is seeking an Editorial Director to oversee our three consumer-facing newsletters: Morning Brew (the flagship daily business news newsletter), Brew Markets (a daily markets and investing newsletter), and The Playbook (our newest publication—a weekly newsletter for aspiring real estate investors). They have large, loyal followings and our aim is to deepen and expand each newsletter’s relationship with its readers by adding an Editorial Director to lead the charge. This role will also be a key decision maker in future consumer-facing newsletter launches.

- Ensuring stylistic consistency across the publications and maintaining a high bar for quality

- Serving as the liaison with stakeholders across the company (product, design, tech, revenue, and growth)

- Managing staff (writers, editors, and copyeditors) and resources across publications

- Manage launch process for any upcoming consumer newsletters that the company decided to launch

- Providing editing support to newsletter teams when necessary. Not afraid to roll up your sleeves.

- Pushing our publications forward, both editorially and from a product lens

This position will report to the President of Morning Brew Inc. and will work closely with the Editor at Large, who is the previous executive editor of the consumer newsletters.

They will have a firm grasp of the media business as well as strong editorial skills, such as editing and news judgement. We will be looking for candidates with a product orientation and a record of using data to guide decisions. Working well with other people is a must.

Also a must: The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of Morning Brew’s style: witty but not cringe, informative but never dry, and, above all, memorable. This is rare opening to work on the most beloved business news newsletters in the world and we want someone who has a strong connection to our brands.

Morning Brew is based in New York City and local candidates will be given strong preference, remote applications may be considered.

- Enforce editorial and content policies and approaches across all consumer newsletters. Including but not limited to making sure we consistently write in our brand voices and that we choose the stories most firmly within our aperture.

- Identify and execute on opportunities for reporters and teams to collaborate with consumer content franchises, multimedia teams, professional (b2b) franchises, and external partners in ways that will further serve our consumer NL audiences.

- Understand where the news and media industries are headed. Be open and interested in operating publications that do not adhere directly to anyone else’s playbook.

WHAT ELSE ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Character and integrity rank pretty high on the list. Our team is guided by our core values:

HOW WE TREAT EACH OTHER

• Respectful Candor: We believe that engaging in timely, constructive, and open discourse is an act of respect that makes for a more transparent and productive work environment.

• Empathy: We establish a strong partnership of trust with our co-workers and partners. We build human connections in order to understand each other.

• Inclusivity: We strive to celebrate and welcome people of diverse backgrounds and cultures. Differing perspectives help us make better decisions and have more fulfilling experiences.

HOW WE TREAT OUR WORK

• Curiosity: We learn every day through deliberate inquiry and exploration. We re-examine assumptions to be a better company, offer better products, and become better colleagues.

• Accountability: We celebrate our successes and own our failures. Taking responsibility for our actions allows us to learn from our experiences.

• Bias Toward Action: We know speed matters in business so we embrace quick and calculated risk-taking. We understand that many actions are reversible and therefore we are solutions-oriented, even when facing obstacles and challenges.

• Challenger Mentality: We don’t allow ourselves to be comfortable with our success. We are hungry to become the best and create more value for our audience.

• Clarity of Purpose: We understand the “why" in our work, which helps us to operate at our highest level of performance and efficiency.
