Job summary
Cloudflare is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer in Austin to shape the Linux-based edge appliance runtime and distributed control plane. You will build a scalable, secure platform that connects customer sites to Cloudflare and supports hundreds to thousands of branch sites.
This hands-on role blends low-level systems work with distributed services and API design, guiding major initiatives with technical leadership and collaboration with product and security teams.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and operating complex production systems.
- Strong Linux systems and networking knowledge (TCP/IP, namespaces, routing, IPsec, etc.).
- Experience designing distributed control planes and remote configuration for large fleets.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement the cloud control plane, Linux appliance runtime, telemetry pipeline, and deployment environments.
- Develop and harden the Linux-based dataplane and secure networking capabilities.
- Build distributed control-plane and state-management systems that tolerate intermittent connectivity and scale to thousands of devices.
- Improve hardware-backed identity, attestation, secure boot, and staged OTA upgrades with safe rollback.
- Make operability a product feature with telemetry, diagnostics, and remote operations.
