Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) seeks an execution-driven attorney to help formulate agency legal strategies. Based at SCDMV Headquarters in Blythewood, SC, the Attorney III will provide counsel on contracts, procurement, data security, and litigation across divisions of the agency.

Responsibilities include advising on policy, preparing legal documents, representing the department in court, and training staff on legal matters.

Qualifications

• A juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school.
• A minimum of five years' experience as a practicing attorney.
• Must have Rule 403 Requirements, S.C. Appellate Court Rules.

Responsibilities

• Identify legal problems with divisions and advise on contracts, procurement, and data security.
• Provide legal counsel to the financial responsibility office on self-insured companies and related litigation.
• Advise Office of Inspector General on vehicle dealer and driver training school regulation; litigate cases and appeals.
• Respond to legal inquiries from the public and other government agencies on contracts, procurement, bankruptcy, probate, and trust issues.
• Advise on policy and operating procedures resulting from legislation, regulations and court decisions; develop training materials and conduct trainings.
• Prepare memoranda, briefs, and proposed orders in court and administrative appeals.
• Research and prepare legal opinions for department use.
• Represent the department in litigation in various courts as assigned.
• Serve as secondary attorney for titles, taxes, and other motor vehicle-related issues.
• Perform other duties as required.
