Job summary

Disability Rights Texas is seeking a Policy Specialist to serve as the in-house expert on assigned disability policy issues and to lead advocacy efforts. You will train colleagues, draft policy analyses, and engage with boards, councils, and public officials to advance rights protections.

The role requires extensive research, stakeholder communication, and coordination with state and national organizations to influence policy and program results.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Public Policy, Political Science, Government, Education, Disability Studies, or related field.
• At least seven years of public policy experience focusing on disability issues.
• Strong writing, verbal, and negotiating communication skills.
• Experience in public speaking and developing presentations for the public, Boards, Councils, Conferences, and legislative testimony.
• Ability to lead, mentor and train others; collaborate with government entities.
• Knowledge of state and federal laws, rights protection statutes and regulations.
• Excellent organizational skills; ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Responsibilities

• Serve as in-house policy expert and lead advocacy efforts.
• Provide training and technical assistance to case handlers.
• Research, write policy reports, and provide stakeholder communications.
• Monitor legislation and provide public testimony and updates.
• Collaborate with state and national advocacy organizations and policymakers.
• Develop annual program reports and grant reporting.
