Job summary

Investment Company Institute (ICI) seeks a senior leader to direct membership strategy reporting to the COO. You will collaborate across the organization to develop and deliver membership communications, content, and engagement with asset management contacts to expand membership and strengthen relations.

You will lead recruitment, retention, and engagement efforts for current and prospective members. Based in Washington, DC, this hybrid role requires three days in the office and two days working

Job description

Salary Range: $210,000.00 To $245,000.00 Annually

The Investment Company Institute (ICI) is the leading association representing regulated investment funds, including mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), closed-end funds, and unit investment trusts (UITs) in the United States, and UCITS and similar funds offered to investors in Europe, Asia, and other jurisdictions. ICI also represents its members on issues involving the capital markets, separately managed accounts (SMAs) and collective investment trusts (CITs). ICI’s mission is to strengthen the foundation of the asset management industry for the ultimate benefit of the long-term individual investor.

This position is responsible for membership strategy reporting to the COO. The person will work across the organization to develop and deliver membership communications and content and engage with contacts across the asset management industry to expand membership and improve existing membership relations. The person will lead recruiting, retention, and engagement of existing and new members.

Essential functions of this role include:
  • Lead membership strategy while reporting to the COO.
  • Develop comprehensive programs and services for recruitment, retention, and engagement of members.
  • Work across ICI to develop and deliver communications and other materials to increase member understanding of resources available throughout ICI and to validate the value of membership.
  • Continually monitor the asset management industry to identify and pursue new targets for membership.
  • Build and manage relationships at existing member firms and prospective member organizations to deepen engagement, understand business priorities, and strengthen ICI’s relationships across the asset management ecosystem.
  • Lead the execution of ICI’s membership revenue model, including the annual dues collection process, revenue forecasting, and member segmentation analysis.
  • Oversee and operationalize key member engagement metrics using databases, analytics, and ICI proprietary CRM to inform decisions, including preparing dashboards on member participation, renewal risks, revenue trends, event attendance, committee activity, and advocacy engagement. Present data into timely, valued information for leadership to support decisions as to how to invest executive time and resources and identify under-engaged segments and places where ICI’s value proposition needs strengthening.
  • Manage the Membership staff to build a high-performing, top-flight membership team that supports the entire organization.
  • Serve as an internal “voice of the membership” and systematically capture member priorities, concerns, and emerging business needs and translates them into insights for ICI leadership.
  • Develop relationships with member companies and serve as a central point of contact to guide responses by colleagues across ICI to answer member inquiries and requests.
  • Oversee memo and statistical publications businesses and annual invoice billing and collection.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field and 10 years of proven management experience with a trade association or similar experience with a for-profit organization or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Previous experience working in financial services and market experience are highly desirable.
  • A strategic mindset and ability to translate member needs into organizational priorities, drive growth, influence leadership decisions, and advance mission-critical outcomes.
  • Ability to use data to influence strategy. Proficiency with CRM platforms, analytics, and performance metrics, using member engagement data to guide strategic decision-making.
  • Deep understanding of trade association membership models, including corporate, associate, and sponsor-based structures, with experience designing value propositions, dues strategies, recruitment programs, retention initiatives that grow membership.
  • Familiarity with or ability to quickly learn complexities of the asset management industry.
  • Demonstrated leadership of high-performing teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively collaborate and interact with senior level ICI staff and members.
  • High degree of productivity, responsiveness, initiative, and flexibility.
