Job summary

Qualifications

  • 12+ years of related nonprofit communications experience.

Your Purpose

Reporting to the Vice President, Advancement, the Senior Director, Advancement and Communications will lead and drive the strategic direction for NTC’s external communications, in close collaboration with departments across the organization. This position is responsible for ensuring consistency in NTC’s brand and driving communication strategies that amplify NTC’s reputation in the K‑12 education field with priority audiences.

What Will You Do

Some responsibilities and duties may vary, but the role of the Senior Director, Advancement and Communications includes:

External Communications Strategy
  • Develop NTC’s external communication and content strategy, aligned to annual goals, core messages, and priority audiences (purchasers, State and Cabinet‑level leaders, and research community)
  • Serve as the primary “driver” of NTC’s communication and content strategy, overseeing work across individual contributors and teams so that all communications go out on time with compelling, accurate language
  • Oversee the writing, editing, and design process across all content channels
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Leadership Team and Executive Team, supporting their role in internal and external communications
  • Lead cross‑team efforts to step back on key performance indicators and external landscape data to make strategic, informed decisions that continuously improve communication strategies
National Philanthropy
  • In collaboration with fundraising teams, use NTC’s grants pipeline data to recommend decisions on where and when communications should target a philanthropic audience
  • Oversee communications and content that effectively tells NTC’s story and demonstrates its impact to philanthropic audiences
  • Within the external communication strategy, identify opportunities to leverage the philanthropic community as an amplifier and endorser of NTC’s work
  • Collaborate with the Finance team to provide regular reports and updates to the Leadership team and the Board on fundraising activities, outcomes, and challenges
Leadership and Team Management
  • Manage staff who will be responsible for content generation, editing, communication operations, and landscape research that support our external communication strategy
  • Coordinate the work of the editorial team (Advancement and Business Development team members) and lead regular meetings to gather ideas, report on lessons learned, and integrate cross‑team efforts
  • Lead efforts across departments to gather content input and reviews that move our external communication strategy forward
  • Create an unrivaled employee experience where staff thrive through learning, growth, development, and engagement within the organization
  • Manage and develop a team through effective feedback and development strategies aligned with a culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Drive professional learning and development for direct reports and their team, including job‑embedded coaching
  • Establish and maintain a strong team culture in alignment with NTC’s mission, core values, and theory of change
  • Inclusively facilitate collaboration across diverse groups of people, functions, levels, and contexts, both internally and externally, to build vision alignment
What Will You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required; Master’s degree preferred
  • 12+ years of related experience in nonprofit communications, product, marketing, or related field.
  • 5+ years of people management experience (direct supervisory and management responsibilities, including hiring, developing, and evaluating performance).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to foster deeply collaborative relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
  • A proven track record of collaboration, transparency, communication, and accountability.
  • Experience analyzing data to identify marketing and thought leadership opportunities, create strategic plans, and develop brand‑building and stakeholder engagement strategies.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills; ability to translate specialized information into accessible communications for any audience (including K‑12 education leaders and the philanthropic community).
  • Ability to use data to drive strategy and serve as a strategic thought leader.
  • Experience in multi‑channel content marketing strategies and implementation
  • Ability to multitask, especially in managing multiple deliverables simultaneously; outstanding time‑management skills.
  • Exceptional project management skills; able to work efficiently, navigate ambiguity, and prioritize in a virtual environment
  • A strong understanding of the nonprofit K‑12 education field
  • Commitment to and passion for the mission and vision of the organization
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google Suite (Slides, Docs, Sheets)
  • Preferred:
    • Direct experience in the nonprofit K‑12 education field
    • Familiarity with Content Management Systems (i.e., WordPress) and Project Management Systems (i.e., Asana)
    • Experience with MailerLite and Salesforce platforms
What We Offer

This position offers a competitive starting salary range of $151,200- $170,100 along with a comprehensive benefits package. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary closer to the start of the range. At NTC, when determining a salary offer for a role, we consider the specific requirements of the role, the relevant experience, and the required skills, while maintaining equity within our compensation bands. For this and other reasons, we have adopted a no‑negotiation policy.
