Job summary

AeroVironment, Inc. is seeking a Directed Energy Senior Opto-Mechanical Test Engineer to support manufacturing and system testing for advanced electro‑optical and mechanical systems.

You will help develop test strategies, fixtures, and automated solutions to verify product performance and reliability. The role requires expertise in opto‑mechanical assemblies, precision alignment, environmental testing, data analysis, and collaboration across mechanical, electrical, optical, software, and systems

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Optical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering or related field.
• 5–7 years engineering test/verification experience.
• Experience testing opto‑mechanical systems or precision electro‑optical assemblies.
• Experience with optical alignment, measurement, and troubleshooting.
• Experience with instrumentation such as scopes, power supplies, DAQ systems, sensors, meters, interferometers, or collimators.
• Experience developing test fixtures.
• Knowledge of GD&T, tolerancing, and mechanical interfaces.
• Strong technical writing, documentation, and communication skills.
• Ability to work in a fast‑paced, multidisciplinary environment.
• U.S. Citizenship required; ability to obtain/maintain a security clearance if needed.

Responsibilities

• Refine test plans, procedures, and requirements traceability for opto‑mechanical systems.
• Develop, document, and execute tests for optical and opto‑mechanical components.
• Design/build/validate test fixtures, tooling, and instrumentation.
• Execute environmental, vibration, shock, thermal, and reliability tests.
• Perform precision optical alignment and characterization of cameras and related assemblies.
• Integrate mechanical, optical, electrical, and software components in test setups.
• Analyze data, identify trends, and prepare technical reports.
• Troubleshoot failures with design engineers to determine root causes.
• Support design reviews, risk assessments, and verification activities.
• Ensure compliance with standards, procedures, and safety.
