Job summary

Peraton is seeking a Senior Digital Forensics Examiner in Bethesda, MD to lead comprehensive examinations of digital media and devices for a DoD customer. You will manage the full lifecycle of digital evidence, from acquisition to reporting, acting as a subject-matter expert.

The role requires experience with EnCase/FTK/Magnet AXIOM/X-Ways/Autopsy, mobile forensics, and strong reporting skills. A Top Secret/SCI clearance with Poly and DoD 8570/8140 IAT Level II certification are required.

Qualifications

• Proven proficiency with industry-standard forensic tool suites (e.g., EnCase, FTK, Magnet AXIOM, X-Ways Forensics, Autopsy).
• Mobile forensics experience extracting and parsing iOS and Android with Cellebrite UFED/Physical Analyzer or GrayKey.
• Knowledge of file systems and structures (NTFS, FAT32, exFAT, EXT3/4, APFS, HFS+).
• Ability to identify full-disk, volume, and file-level encryption and decryption workflows.
• Familiarity with cryptographic hashing (MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256) for data integrity and artifact identification.
• Experience performing static/behavioral triage of malware to support attribution.
• Strong technical writing and briefing for forensic reports.
• Active Top Secret/SCI clearance with a Polygraph.
• BS/BA with 8+ years, MS/MA with 6+ years, or PhD with 3+ years in relevant fields; additional experience may substitute degree.
• Desired: advanced certifications and scripting skills to automate workflows.

Responsibilities

• Conduct forensically sound examinations of digital and mobile devices to support investigations.
• Perform data extraction, recovery, and in-depth analysis of file systems and applications across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android.
• Generate timelines, hash analyses, email and communications analysis, and examine large datasets.
• Identify malware and intrusions; provide expert opinions in reports for varied audiences.
• Draft, peer-review, and maintain chain-of-custody documents for digital evidence.
• Consult stakeholders on TTPs for digital evidence handling and examinations.
• Stay updated on trends and best practices in digital forensics.
