Job summary

Boston Dynamics is seeking a Senior Staff DFM Manufacturing Engineer to bridge Hardware Engineering and our Precision Shop, turning complex robotic designs into high-precision machined parts. You will own the manufacturing feedback loop to balance design intent with machining capabilities, enabling rapid prototype iterations and low-volume production.

You will apply expert knowledge of machining, GD&T, and DFx to optimize part geometry for manufacturability, cost, and lead time, while mentoring

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent.
• At least 10 years of manufacturing engineering or related experience in a machining-intensive environment.
• Expert-level understanding of precision machining capabilities and material constraints.
• Strong CAD proficiency for fixture design and review of drawings.
• Deep understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5) and its application in design for manufacturing and inspection.
• Excellent communication and ability to influence stakeholders.
• Hands-on problem solving in mechanical and process challenges.
• Experience building process controls and quality systems (8D, RCCA).
• Comfortable in fast-paced iterative R&D settings.

Responsibilities

• Lead DFM/DFA collaboration to ensure manufacturability.
• Serve as primary design-engineering liaison to balance constraints and performance.
• Define inspection protocols using GD&T and verify dimensional standards.
• Lead root-cause analysis to improve yield and quality.
• Champion Lean Manufacturing to reduce cycle times and improve flow.
• Create and maintain process documentation, setup sheets, instructions.
• Mentor junior engineers and technicians on DFX and GMP practices.
