Job summary

Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI) in Brooklyn, NY seeks a Senior DevOps Engineer to modernize and secure the city's digital infrastructure. You will bridge development and operations, automate core processes, and support government services at scale.

You will design cloud/hybrid infra, implement CI/CD pipelines, manage containerized environments, and ensure high availability with comprehensive monitoring and security tooling. This role requires leadership and collaboration across teams.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in computer science or related field.
  • Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of experience also acceptable.
  • Six years of experience with high-level IT leadership acceptable as alternative.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain scalable cloud and hybrid infrastructure.
  • Design, build, and maintain robust CI/CD pipelines for fast, secure deployments.
  • Architect and manage containerized environments (Docker, ECS/EKS/AKS).
  • Implement logging, monitoring, and alerting (Dynatrace, Grafana, CloudWatch, Azure Monitor).
  • Develop, integrate, and maintain pipelines for security scanning and vulnerability management.
  • Lead automated provisioning, patching, and upgrades of cloud databases and apps.
  • Maintain application configuration, secrets, and certificates.
  • Collaborate with software engineering, security, and product teams to foster DevOps culture.
  • Support rapid prototyping and deployment of AI models and MCP servers.

OTI seeks an experienced and forward-thinking Senior DevOps Engineer to drive the modernization, scalability, and security of the city's critical digital infrastructure. In this role, you will bridge the gap between development and operations, automating core processes to ensure the seamless delivery of civic technology solutions that serve millions of New Yorkers and thousands of businesses daily.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable cloud and hybrid infrastructure using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation.
  • Design, build, and maintain robust CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, GitHub) to ensure fast, secure, and reliable software deployments.
  • Architect and manage containerized environments utilizing Docker and containerized cloud services (e.g., Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS, Azure AKS) to support microservices.
  • Implement comprehensive logging, monitoring, and alerting systems (e.g., Dynatrace, Elastic, Grafana, AWS CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, ScienceLogic) to ensure high availability and proactive issue resolution.
  • Develop, integrate, and maintain pipelines that automate security scanning and vulnerability management.
  • Lead the automated provisioning, patching, and version upgrades of cloud databases and containerized applications to ensure high availability, security, and peak performance.
  • Maintain application configuration, secrets, and certificates.
  • Partner closely with software engineering, security, and product teams to foster a DevOps culture, providing technical leadership and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Drive rapid prototyping, validation, and deployment of cutting-edge AI models, Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and Proofs of Concept (POCs) to evaluate technical feasibility and accelerate business innovation.
  • Perform special projects and initiatives as assigned.
Hours/Shift

Day - Due to the technical duties of this position in a 24/7 operation, candidate may be required to work overtime and/or various shifts such as weekends and/or nights/evenings.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. 1. A master's degree in computer science from an accredited college or university and three (3) years of progressively more responsible, full-time, satisfactory experience in Information Technology (IT) including applications development, systems development, data communications and networking, database administration, data processing, or user services. At least eighteen (18) months of this experience must have been in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity in the areas of applications development, systems development, data communications and networking, database administration, data processing or in the supervision of staff performing these duties; or
  2. 2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of progressively more responsible, full-time, satisfactory experience as described in "1" above; or
  3. 3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and six (6) years of progressively more responsible, full-time, satisfactory experience as described in "1" above; or
  4. 4. A satisfactory combination of education and experience equivalent to "1", "2" or "3" above. However, all candidates must have at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and must possess at least three (3) years of experience as described in "1" above, including the eighteen (18) months of administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory experience as described in "1" above.
Preferred Skills
  • 8+ years of experience in a DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or Systems Engineering role.
  • Hands-on experience architecting, deploying, and supporting enterprise-level IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS solutions within AWS or Microsoft Azure (Google Cloud is a plus).
  • Proven experience deploying and supporting containerized applications and microservices architectures in production environments using Azure ECS, Azure ACA and AWS AKS.
  • Ability to manage and provision AWS RDS services and databases, including PostgreSQL, Oracle, and equivalent databases.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language (e.g., Python, Bash, PowerShell, Java, JavaScript).
  • Familiarity with advanced AI frameworks, LLM orchestration tools (such as LangChain or LlamaIndex) and GitHub Copilot.
  • Familiarity with implementing MCP servers and vector databases to accelerate intelligent application development.
  • Experience building and managing automated CI/CD pipelines using modern tools such as Git, Azure DevOps, Terraform.
  • Strong understanding of cloud networking and security components, including load balancers, CDNs, WAFs, API gateways, proxies, and fundamental API security concepts.
  • Experience configuring and enabling comprehensive monitoring, logging, and alerting systems for cloud services to ensure high availability.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across complex networks, systems, and application stacks.
