Senior Database Developer (Finance) - Raleigh / Durham / Cary/ Research Triangle, NC

Our client, a leading insurance company in the US, is seeking a Sr. Database Developer with a strong background in Java/.Net to deliver customer‑centric solutions for risk management applications while managing the daily demands of a growing business. The role involves the design, development, and operation of risk management applications following the full systems development lifecycle (SDLC). This position offers ample opportunities to lead, influence, and mentor other team members, and eventually transition into a project management role.

• Design, develop, and implement applications following full SDLC
• Provide data‑driven technology solutions and strong database design and optimization skills
• Develop and maintain complex database processes
• Analyze requirements and prepare detailed technical design documents
• Lead the continued development of processes related to data enrichment
• Provide coding and environment support for the applications team
• Work with developers and DBAs to tune database procedures and SQL
• Reinforce the use of best practices and coding standards
• Design effective system architectures focused on usability and scalability
• Scope engineering efforts and develop resource plans and timelines to meet deliverables
• Develop and design software architecture plans

Qualifications

Required Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent work experience required
• 10+ years of related work experience
• 5+ years of experience working in the investments domain, with a strong understanding of financial products (fixed‑rate bonds, floating‑rate bonds, interest rate swaps, futures, caps & floors, FX swaps, equities)
• 5+ years of relational database development experience, able to transform business requirements into implementable designs
• 5+ years of MS SQL Server experience
• 3+ years of experience with a procedural language such as Java or .NET, including application architecture concepts
• 3+ years of experience working directly with business users
• 3+ years of experience planning, conducting, and evaluating unit, integration, and user acceptance tests
• 3+ years of experience with MS SQL Server performance tuning

Preferred Experience:

• Knowledge of financial risk management (market risk or credit risk)
• Experience with Big Data solutions, especially Microsoft Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW)
• Experience with BI tools such as SSAS
• Experience coordinating onshore and offshore teams
• Experience with large tables containing hundreds of millions of rows
