Job summary

Elsevier is seeking a Data Scientist to design and deploy ML/NLP/generative AI solutions that accelerate scientific discovery and knowledge extraction. You will work with large-scale scientific content and data to deliver production-ready systems.

You will collaborate across engineering, product, and analytics teams to translate complex problems into measurable outcomes that improve research insights and user value. Strong Python skills and experience with modern ML frameworks are required.

Qualifications

• Experience in data science, ML, AI, NLP, statistics, or related quantitative field.
• Familiar with frontier LLMs such as GPTs, Claude, Gemini and fine-tuning.
• Strong Python skills with clean, tested code.
• Solid ML fundamentals: supervised/unsupervised learning, evaluation, and deployment.
• Experience with large-scale text or content datasets.
• Knowledge of Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, Scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Matplotlib.
• Ability to translate complex requirements into data-driven solutions.
• Clear communication and collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Design and build ML, NLP, and generative AI systems for discovery and knowledge extraction.
• Work with large-scale scientific data: publications, datasets, ontologies, metadata.
• Apply suitable techniques: classification, regression, clustering, embeddings, LLMs, retrieval.
• Develop semantic search, info retrieval, entity extraction, summarization, QA, generation.
• Build, evaluate, fine-tune, and integrate models into production systems.
• Write clean Python and reusable data science components and pipelines.
• Support deployment, monitoring, drift detection, retraining, optimization.
• Collaborate with engineering, product, UX, analytics, research, domain experts.
