NORC at the University of Chicago in Washington, DC is seeking a Principal Data Scientist to lead advanced analytics and AI initiatives within the Statistics and Data Science department. The role may manage teams, shape project strategy, and collaborate with client teams to translate data into actionable insights.

Qualifications

• PhD in a math, statistics, CS, data science, or social science field.
• Expert foundation in statistics, mathematics, ML, and scientific inquiry.
• 15+ years in roles with increasing responsibility, handling large data and statistical modeling.
• Experience leading data science teams of 40+ members.
• Hands-on production AI/ML deployments including NLP, record linkage, synthetic data.
• Experience coordinating across large organizations (100+ staff).
• Ability to explain AI concepts to executives and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience with AI governance aligned to NIST standards.
• Strong data programming in SAS, SQL, Python, R, Tableau, Hadoop, Hive, MapReduce.
• U.S. citizenship required for security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Identify data from multiple sources and provide insights; oversee AI/ML deployments.
• Develop platforms to enhance analytic capabilities.
• Lead AI/ML initiatives including NLP and predictive analytics.
• Mentor teams of data scientists and technical staff.
• Communicate governance and risk management of AI to leaders and clients.
• Support AI governance aligned with federal best practices.
• Collaborate with Census/population statistics stakeholders.
• Lead proposal efforts and contribute to technical sections.
• Train staff on protocols and tasks.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
