Job summary

Gemini is hiring a remote Senior Data Platform Engineer in the United States. You will act as an SRE for the data infrastructure, focusing on reliability, automation, and operability of the database and datastore fleet, especially PostgreSQL/Aurora, with self-service automation and scale.

You’ll extend automation to NoSQL and other datastores, improve observability, and drive SRE practices across multiple technologies in a cloud-native setup.

Qualifications

• 5 years of experience in the field.
• Deep, specialist-level experience managing and scaling relational databases — cloud-native systems like PostgreSQL, Amazon Aurora, or similar.
• Demonstrated SRE mindset with automation, self-service tooling, and guardrails.
• Experience with at least one non-relational paradigm in production (NoSQL, columnar, document, key-value).
• Familiarity with cloud data platforms and services (AWS RDS, Redshift, EMR, BigQuery, Databricks).
• Experience in Terraform and IaC environments; scripting in Python/Go.
• Understanding of CI/CD, observability tooling, SLOs/error budgets, and incident response.
• Experience integrating with data pipelines and real-time messaging systems like Kafka or Kinesis.

Responsibilities

• Build IaC, CLI tools, and CI/CD automation for database provisioning and deployment.
• Own database scaling, replication, failover, backup/recovery, and query performance.
• Extend automation to other datastores (NoSQL, columnar, key-value) and build common tooling.
• Define and track SLOs, implement monitoring, and participate in on-call rotations.
• Collaborate with data and product teams to integrate pipelines (Kafka, ETL) across real-time and batch.
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks at query and infra levels.
• Establish alerting and incident response procedures to reduce MTTR.
• Automate away repetitive operational work and contribute to platform playbooks.
