Job summary

ZipStaff seeks a Senior Data Modeler to govern data models and event contracts bridging legacy systems with modern architectures. You will lead canonical models, governance, and schema standards across Kafka environments to ensure reliable data exchange for mission‑critical rail and transit platforms.

You will collaborate with architects, engineers, and business SMEs to translate complex business rules into reusable data definitions, while ensuring security and governance policies are followed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field.
• 8+ years of hands‑on data modeling for enterprise systems.
• Mastery of data modeling concepts: grain, normalization, and temporal dating.
• Experience with Kafka and Confluent Schema Registry.
• Experience defining semantic naming standards and metadata dictionaries.
• Knowledge of distributed architectures and API integration.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder facilitation.
• On-site in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

• Design and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical data models across data at rest and data in motion.
• Govern event contracts and API schemas using Kafka Schema Registry, enforcing compatibility and standards.
• Define canonical information models, shared entities, and enterprise naming conventions per standards.
• Reverse-engineer legacy systems to support modernization and data integration.
• Ensure end‑to‑end traceability between business concepts, logical models, physical schemas, and event streams.
• Review designs for data integrity, normalization tradeoffs, and security/compliance.
• Lead modeling working sessions with business and technical stakeholders.
