Job summary

Backblaze is seeking a senior backend engineer to own and scale the data infrastructure that powers our B2 Object Storage and Cloud Backup offerings. You’ll design automation, improve observability, and drive architectural changes for durability and throughput across thousands of servers.

You’ll build and extend automation frameworks, dashboards, and health tooling, collaborating with cross-functional teams in a remote-friendly, fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of backend development in an enterprise environment.
• Experience designing automation frameworks or platforms that other engineers build on.
• Experience building large scale software systems running on thousands of servers.
• Experience building automation or tooling that other engineers depend on daily.
• Working knowledge of an observability stack (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, ELK, Datadog).
• Strong Linux fundamentals and comfort operating in a bare-metal or hybrid environment.
• Professional experience incorporating AI-assisted development tools (Gemini, Cursor, Claude Code).
• Comfortable with the full software development lifecycle.

Responsibilities

• Design and build automation frameworks for fleet provisioning and repair.
• Extend observability stack with metrics, logs, traces, alerts to monitor health.
• Build dashboards and visualizations for fleet health, capacity, and trends.
• Create health tooling to detect hardware issues, drift, and capacity risk.
• Lead technical design discussions and write design docs for cross-team changes.
• Drive large feature implementations from design through rollout and migration work.
• Partner with on-call rotation to automate toil and improve signal.
