Job summary

Blue Shield of CA is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to lead the design and delivery of complex data pipelines on cloud platforms, with emphasis on security, automation, and reliability. You will influence SDLC practices, ensure production readiness, and mentor teams in a collaborative setting.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years in data engineering, strong SQL, and experience with Azure data services, modern data stack tools, and data governance in regulated environments.

Qualifications

• Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
• Requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant data engineering experience.
• Strong hands‑on experience with SQL, including scripting and automation.
• Expertise with cloud platforms (Azure preferred) and services such as ADLS, Synapse, and Data Factory.
• Hands‑on experience with modern data stack tools such as dbt, Snowflake, Databricks, Airflow, or Tidal.
• Solid knowledge of data modeling (Data Vault 2.0), data integration, data architecture, warehousing, and data quality.
• Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Bitbucket, GitHub).
• Strong understanding of agile delivery methodologies and enterprise cloud integration.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical solutions to non‑technical stakeholders.
• Experience in healthcare or regulated environments, including Epic ecosystem exposure preferred.
• Awareness of data governance, security standards, and production certification processes.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate complex data pipelines and cloud data solutions.
• Embed security, automation, and reliability across the SDLC.
• Ensure production readiness and adherence to engineering standards for data products.
• Serve as a hands‑on technical leader and promote engineering best practices.
• Support continuous improvement across people, process, and technology.
