Job summary

The City of Seattle seeks a Senior Data Engineer to lead the Seattle Police Department's DAP and related data systems, delivering scalable, secure analytics in an AWS-based data warehouse environment. You will drive data product development, collaborate with data scientists and stakeholders, and guide architecture choices across cloud and on‑premises infrastructures.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years with database technologies, SQL, scripting, ETL/ELT tools and data integration.
• 4+ years delivering data solutions including data warehouses and analytics models.
• 3+ years designing observable, automated data pipelines and implementing CI/CD.
• 3+ years AWS cloud experience with CloudFormation, S3, Glue, Python, Spark, Lambda, Athena.
• Experience with Jira/Confluence/SharePoint/Teams in Agile environments.
• Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills for diverse audiences.
• Ability to translate business requirements into well-structured data architectures and designs.
• Experience supporting data science workflows and ML pipelines (SageMaker or similar).

Responsibilities

• Translate requirements into well-engineered data products with stakeholders.
• Assess emerging tools and AWS services for feasibility, cost, and value.
• Coordinate IT resources to support DAP Data Mart/Warehouse.
• Provide operational monitoring, troubleshooting, and production support.
• Plan and implement improvements to AWS analytics systems and on‑premises stores.
• Deliver updated data products in collaboration with partners and teams.
• Research future analytics solutions using AWS services and trends.
• Build and maintain scalable, secure data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes.
• Ensure observability, testability, reliability, and CI/CD workflow automation.
• Develop clear documentation for pipelines, architectures, and data models.
• Review code and mentor teammates; enforce data quality standards.
• Monitor security vulnerabilities identified by AWS Inspector.
