The Work

Our team is at the forefront of data-backed decision-making to align with organizational objectives. As part of our team, the Senior Data Engineer will play a critical role in building, maintaining, and scaling our AWS-based data infrastructure, which includes a data lake and warehouse that support both internal operational reporting and external customer-facing in-product reporting.

This role will contribute to Lexipol's 2025 strategic data goals, including:

  • Building and scaling our data infrastructure, including both the data lake and Redshift warehouse.
  • Delivering reporting requirements for in-product reporting.
  • Maintaining data lake architecture diagrams and ensuring data flow documentation is up to date.
  • Documenting job schedules and automating data pipeline monitoring.
  • Migrating all ETL processes, jobs, and data sources from Azure to Redshift.
  • Establishing backup and recovery schedules for all critical data.
  • Cost-optimizing the data lake for efficient storage and processing.

Role Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain an AWS-based Redshift data warehouse and data lake to support enterprise-wide data needs.
  • Build and optimize data pipelines using AWS services such as Glue, Kinesis Firehose, Lambda, Step Functions.
  • Oversee data lake cost management, ensuring efficient resource utilization and cost reduction.
  • Design and document data lake architecture, including data flow diagrams, processing logic, and schema design.
  • Develop and maintain playbooks and configuration guides for data lake operations, troubleshooting, and best practices.
  • Design and maintain Redshift schemas, tables, and views, optimizing for performance and scalability.
  • Implement data ingestion and ETL/ELT processes, ensuring efficient transformation and integration of data sources.
  • Contribute to the migration from Azure to Redshift, ensuring seamless transition of ETL jobs, data sources, and workflows.
  • Document and maintain job schedules, data flow diagrams, and system architecture.
  • Define and enforce backup and disaster recovery policies for data infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, DevOps, and Data Services teams to ensure smooth data integration and ongoing system optimization.
  • Set up roles, permissions, and security policies to ensure secure access and governance across the data lake.
  • Proactively troubleshoot and optimize data pipeline performance, identifying areas for automation and improvement.
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior data engineers on AWS best practices and Redshift optimization.

Requirements: To be considered for this role, you will have this experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years, prefer 5+ years of current experience in data engineering, with a focus on AWS cloud-based data solutions.
  • Proven current expertise with Redshift: optimizing performance, advanced query writing & optimization, monitoring & alerts, workload management.
  • AWS data lake services, including Glue, Apache Airflow, Step-Functions, S3, Kinesis Firehose, Lambda
  • Current Advanced Python experience for data transformations and automation.
  • Experience in ETL/ELT processes, including ingesting and transforming structured and semi-structured data (e.g., JSON, Parquet, ORC).
  • Experience with data security best practices, IAM roles, and encryption standards.
  • Hands-on experience with Terraform for infrastructure-as-code (IaC) deployment.
  • Experience structuring and managing data in data lakes to support AI applications, such as large language models or enterprise copilots; ideally with a background in preparing data for custom AI analysis and model development.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve data pipeline performance issues.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally and explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with real-time streaming data processing (Kinesis, Kafka, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with data governance, cataloging, and metadata management in a cloud environment.
  • Experience with DevOps CI/CD pipelines for automating data pipeline deployment.
  • Background in public safety, law enforcement, fire, EMS, or government-related industries.

  • The Data Lake Engineer will receive regular weekly check-in meetings with the Director of Internal Technology.

  • Complete the full migration from Azure to AWS Redshift for all ETL processes, jobs, and data sources.
  • Establish a fully operational AWS data lake, with documented data architecture and job schedules.
  • Cost-optimize the data lake, reducing unnecessary data storage and processing expenses.
  • Maintain 99.9% uptime for critical data pipelines and analytics infrastructure.
  • Reduce query execution time in Redshift by 50% through performance tuning and materialized views.
  • Implement role-based access control (RBAC) and security policies for data governance and compliance.
  • Mentor and develop at least 2 junior engineers on AWS data engineering best practices.

Compensation And Benefits

Lexipol offers a competitive base salary, monthly, quarterly, or annual incentive and a comprehensive benefits package including 401(k) with Company match and a flexible paid time off plan.

Base salary for this role is $160K - $165K with up to an 8% bonus opportunity
