Job summary

ABB is seeking a Data Center Sr. PLC Technician for nationwide travel across the United States. You will lead commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of paralleling switchgear and PLC-based controls in mission-critical power systems.

You will guide junior field resources, coordinate with customers and project teams, and ensure safe, compliant field execution while delivering technical leadership and clear status updates.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with 7+ years of field experience or associate/bachelor with 5+ years.
• Independent capability on highly complex field assignments.
• Experience with low- and medium-voltage switchgear, breakers, relays, generator controls, PLC-based controls, HMIs/ACS, networking, mission-critical power systems.
• Hands-on startup and commissioning, energization, troubleshooting under schedule pressure, leading multi-person site teams.
• Ability to read and redline complex electrical/control drawings and apply engineering methods in the field.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, customer communication, reporting, and field leadership skills.

Responsibilities

• Plan and execute complex field assignments involving paralleling switchgear and PLC/Relay transfer schemes from pre-startup to troubleshooting.
• Lead testing of emergency/standby power systems and transfer sequences.
• Configure and debug generator controls, protective relays, switchgear controls, meters, PLCs, HMIs, and communications.
• Perform advanced PLC ladder logic modifications using approved documentation and change control.
• Establish and troubleshoot Modbus, PLC-to-PLC, remote PLC, and SCADA communications.
• Interpret diagrams, schematics, and sequencing documents; coordinate commissioning procedures.
• Lead on-site technical execution, manage daily work, and ensure on-time, on-budget project completion.
• Mentor junior field engineers and technicians; provide coaching on safety, troubleshooting, and customer communication.
• Act as senior escalation resource for remote/on-site troubleshooting and emergency response.
• Complete field service reports, checklists, redlines, backups, and customer status updates.
• Protect ABB and customer assets, control costs, and identify quality improvements.
• Build customer relationships by translating findings into actionable plans and risk assessments.
