Job summary

ABB Inc. seeks a Data Center Sr. PLC Technician to lead on-site commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of paralleling switchgear and PLC systems in mission-critical data center power applications across the United States.

The role requires extensive travel, mentorship of junior field staff, and coordination with customers, contractors, and design engineers. Remote in the US work model applies, with comprehensive travel support provided.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with 7+ years of field experience or an associate/bachelor degree with 5+ years in a related field.
• Demonstrated ability to handle highly complex field assignments.
• Advanced experience with low- and medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, generator controls, PLC-based controls, HMIs/ACS, and industrial networking.

Responsibilities

• Plan, organize, and execute complex field assignments involving Paralleling Switchgear and PLC/Relay transfer schemes across pre-startup, startup, commissioning, and maintenance.
• Lead testing of emergency power systems, open/closed-transition sequences, load add/shed, paralleling, import/export, baseload applications.
• Configure, verify, and troubleshoot generator controls, protective relays, meters, PLCs, HMIs, and related communications.
• Perform advanced troubleshooting and authorized modifications of PLC ladder logic, I/O, communications, and ACS parameters.
• Establish and troubleshoot Modbus, PLC-to-PLC, remote PLC, PLC-to-ACS, and BMS/SCADA communications.
• Interpret electrical drawings, sequence-of-operations, and commissioning procedures.
• Lead on-site execution, coordinate daily work, communicate status and risks, manage punch-list closure, and ensure on-time, on-budget completion.
• Direct and mentor junior field engineers and technicians, assign work, and provide coaching on safe execution and customer communication.
• Act as senior escalation resource for remote and on-site troubleshooting, including emergency response.
• Complete accurate field service reports, startup checklists, redlines, and customer updates.
• Protect ABB and customer assets, manage costs, and identify opportunities to improve quality and service delivery.
• Build customer relationships by translating technical findings into clear actions and recovery plans.
