Job summary

The Machine Learning in Neurosurgery (MLiNS) Lab at the University of Michigan is seeking a Data Scientist / Machine Learning Engineer to build and lead multimodal data infrastructure for medical AI systems. You will work with radiology, digital pathology, intraoperative imaging, and longitudinal EMR data to create reliable, governed data platforms.

Qualifications

• Master's degree or higher in a related field or substantial equivalent professional experience.
• Strong Python and SQL skills with production-quality data pipelines experience.
• Fluency with Linux, Bash, Git, testing, debugging and documentation.
• Experience handling large heterogeneous datasets and reproducible systems.
• Experience with high-performance, distributed, or cloud computing; SLURM familiarity is valued.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate across disciplines with rigorous science.

Responsibilities

• Design and maintain scalable pipelines for ingesting, harmonizing, and versioning multimodal clinical data.
• Develop durable SQL data models and interfaces connecting imaging, pathology, clinical text, and outcomes.
• Create preprocessing pipelines for DICOM, MRI/CT, whole-slide pathology, and Raman histology.
• Establish automated data-quality, provenance, de-identification, and audit processes for HIPAA research.
• Support distributed model training on HPC and cloud with reproducible environments.
• Contribute to medical foundation and vision-language models operating over multimodal data.
• Collaborate with clinicians and researchers, contribute to manuscripts, datasets, and open-source software.
