Job description

Company Information: CARBO Ceramics is a technology company that engineers and manufactures specialty ceramic products for the energy, industrial, and environmental markets. CARBO produces high-performance ceramic proppant, foundry and grinding media, and filtration and pigment products from four United States manufacturing plants in Alabama, Louisiana, and Georgia, supported by its corporate headquarters in Houston, Texas.

Position Summary: CARBO's financial planning and analysis function runs on data pulled from SAP ECC, modeled in Power BI, and delivered to the executive team and to ownership. This role owns that layer end to end: the budget and forecast models, the monthly variance pack, the executive dashboards, and the SQL and Python that feed them. You will work directly with the Chief Financial Officer and partner with Sales and plant Production leadership to turn operational data into the numbers leadership actually decides on. This is a build role as much as a reporting role, and the person in it is expected to replace manual work with documented systems that outlast their own tenure.

  • Owns the annual budget, long-range plan, and rolling forecast models, including the scenario and sensitivity modeling presented for executive review.
  • Builds and maintains the monthly variance analysis comparing actual results against budget and forecast, and writes the commentary identifying the specific drivers behind each variance.
  • Develops and maintains executive dashboards in Power BI, including the underlying data models, DAX measures, and refresh reliability.
  • Extracts and transforms financial and operational data from SAP ECC and the company's SQL Server and cloud data platform using SQL, Power Query, and Python.
  • Prepares monthly financial statements and executive reporting packages.
  • Analyzes revenue, cost, and plant operational performance to identify margin drivers, inefficiencies, and cost optimization opportunities.
  • Partners with Sales and plant Production leadership to source, validate, and integrate operational data into financial planning and reporting processes.
  • Evaluates key performance indicators and operational metrics across the business and reports on trends affecting forecast accuracy.
  • Replaces manual reporting processes with automated pipelines, and documents financial systems logic and a data dictionary for the FP&A layer so that models and reports remain auditable and transferable.

Required Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Information Systems, Economics, Data Analytics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
  • Five or more years of experience in financial planning and analysis, corporate finance, financial systems, or a business analyst role supporting a finance function.
  • Demonstrated ownership of budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis for a business unit or a company, not solely support of another analyst's model.
  • Working knowledge of United States generally accepted accounting principles and fluency with the income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel, including complex and nested formulas, INDEX/MATCH or XLOOKUP, pivot tables, and sound financial model structure.
  • Proficiency writing SQL, including multi-table joins, aggregations, common table expressions, and window functions.
  • Experience building production reports and data models in Power BI and Power Query, including writing DAX measures.
  • Ability to read and write Python for data work, including the NumPy and Pandas libraries.
  • Experience working in SAP ECC or another enterprise resource planning system in a financial reporting or data extraction capacity.
  • Ability to present financial results clearly to non-financial managers, in writing and in person.
  • Ability to work on site at CARBO's Houston, Texas corporate headquarters.
  • Experience with a cloud data platform such as Azure Data Lake, Databricks, Delta Lake, or PySpark preferred.
  • Experience in manufacturing, industrial products, or another multi-plant operating environment preferred.
  • Working knowledge of standard costing, contribution margin, or plant-level cost accounting preferred.
  • Microsoft PL-300 Power BI Data Analyst Associate or DP-600 Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate certification preferred.
  • Certified Corporate FP&A Professional (FPAC) credential preferred.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools within an analytics or reporting workflow preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
  • Positions self to install equipment, including under desks.
  • Moves throughout the building to access files.
  • Must be able to comprehend and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Must be able to complete tasks even with frequent interruptions.
  • Must be able to use discretion and independent judgment as needed.
  • Must be able to speak clearly on the phone and to fellow workers.
