Job summary

GEI Consultants, Inc. seeks a Senior Dams Engineer / Practice Leader to guide the New York metro dams practice from Huntington Station, NY. Lead project delivery, client relationships, and market strategy for high‑impact water infrastructure programs.

You will oversee multidisciplinary teams, secure opportunities, and expand market share in a challenging regional market, with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, and sustainability.

Qualifications

• 20+ years’ experience in design, project management, and construction of dams, levees, flood management systems, and/or hydropower projects.
• Registered professional civil engineer in New York.
• Ability to work with limited supervision; organized; energetic and enthusiastic; and ability to build productive working relationships within the firm and with project teams.
• Understanding regulatory and permitting environment in New York and surrounding states, including NYSDEC, NYCDEP, NJDEP, USACE, FERC, etc.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with growth leaders to develop strategy and vision for the metro NY Dams Practice.
• Identify, pursue, and win opportunities with clients in NY, NJ, CT, the East region, and nationwide.
• Plan, coordinate, direct, and supervise design teams for inspection, evaluation, and design of dams, levees, spillways, outlets, hydroelectric facilities, and related structures.
• Provide technical input in civil, structural, geotechnical, water resources, hydrology and hydraulics, or mechanical disciplines.
• Resolve complex issues to benefit clients and manage local, regional, and national projects.
• Lead project teams of 10+ members across multiple services and subconsultants.

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Dams Engineer / Practice Leader, with a strategic focus on the New York City metro region

This position is a leadership role for a forward-thinking professional who combines technical expertise with strong business development acumen. The ideal candidate will bring proven success in securing, managing, and delivering complex water infrastructure projects and be excited by the opportunity to expand market share in one of the nation’s most critical and complex water markets.

• Collaborate with existing practitioners and growth leaders to develop the overall strategy and vision to reinforce and expand the metro NY Dams Practice
• Identify, develop, pursue, and win opportunities with new and existing clients within New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, the East region, and nationwide
• Plan, coordinate, direct, and supervise design teams in the inspection, evaluation, and design of water infrastructure projects such as dams, levees, spillways, outlet works, hydroelectric facilities, and other appurtenant structures
• Provide technical input and oversight in one or more of the following technical disciplines: civil, structural, geotechnical, water resources, hydrology and hydraulics, mechanical
• Resolve complex issues to benefit our clients
• Manage local, regional, and national projects
• Manage project teams that include 10 or more members, often representing multiple services and subconsultants.

Minimum Qualifications

• 20+ years’ experience in design, project management, and construction of dams, levees, flood management systems, and/or hydropower projects
• Registered professional civil engineer in New York
• Ability to work with limited supervision; organized; energetic and enthusiastic; and ability to build productive working relationships within the firm and with project teams
• Understanding of regulatory and permitting environment in New York and the surrounding states, including work under the jurisdiction of the NYSDEC, NYCDEP, NJDEP, and other agencies (USACE, FERC, etc.)
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Valid driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience in pursuing and winning opportunities for water clients in the metro NY region
• Strong reputation in the metro NY market for dams, levees, flood control structures and/or hydropower services
• Demonstrated experience in water resource engineering with strong analysis and design experience working on large civil works projects such as dams, levees, flood walls, canals, penstocks, and related structures.
• Able to supervise and direct junior staff.
