Job summary

RiseMe is seeking a U.S. Customs Specialist to manage end-to-end clearance for imports, coordinating with customs brokers, freight forwarders, customers, and internal operations teams.

You will review commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, and other documents for accuracy, determine HTS classifications and duties, and resolve issues before submission to brokers. This on-site role in California requires Mandarin and English fluency.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years in U.S. customs operations or import clearance.
• Strong knowledge of HTS classifications and duties.
• Ability to independently resolve complex clearance issues.
• Attention to detail with multiple shipments under time pressure.
• Fluent in Mandarin and English for business documentation.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate U.S. import customs clearance from document prep to cargo release with brokers, forwarders, customers, and ops teams.
• Review invoices, packing lists, B/Ls, and supporting docs for accuracy; resolve discrepancies before broker submission.
• Review HTS classifications, declared values, origin, and duties; resolve discrepancies with brokers.
• Independently manage complex clearance issues, track to resolution, inform stakeholders.
• Monitor changes in U.S. customs requirements, tariffs, and policies; communicate updates to customers and teams.
• Review clearance requirements for new customers, products, and special shipments; flag compliance concerns.
• Monitor broker service quality, review charges, investigate recurring issues, and maintain SOPs.
• Maintain organized customs records and provide day-to-day guidance to operations and customer service.

Key Responsibilities

• 1. Coordinate U.S. import customs clearance from document preparation through cargo release, working closely with customs brokers, freight forwarders, customers, and internal operations teams.
• 2. Review commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, and other supporting documents for accuracy and consistency. Resolve missing or conflicting information before submission to the customs broker.
• 3. Review HTS classifications, declared values, country of origin, and applicable duties and tariffs. Work with customs brokers to resolve discrepancies and elevate complex compliance questions.
• 4. Independently manage complex clearance issues, including customs examinations, cargo holds, requests for additional information, and release delays. Track each issue through resolution and keep relevant parties informed.
• 5. Monitor changes in U.S. customs requirements, tariffs, and trade policies. Assess their operational impact and communicate relevant updates to customers and internal teams.
• 6. Review clearance requirements for new customers, product categories, and special shipments. Identify documentation needs and potential compliance concerns before shipment arrival.
• 7. Monitor customs broker service quality, review duty and clearance-related charges, investigate recurring issues, and maintain clear operating procedures.
• 8. Maintain organized customs records and issue logs, support internal compliance reviews, and provide day-to-day customs guidance to operations and customer service teams.

Qualifications

• 1. At least three years of hands‑on experience in U.S. customs operations, import clearance, or customs brokerage.
• 2. Strong working knowledge of U.S. import procedures, HTS classification, customs valuation, country‑of‑origin requirements, and duty assessment.
• 3. Demonstrated ability to independently resolve complex clearance issues and coordinate effectively with customs brokers and other service providers.
• 4. Ability to review shipment documents carefully, identify discrepancies, and manage multiple shipments under time-sensitive conditions.
• 5. Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese and English, with the ability to communicate professionally and handle business documentation in both languages.
• 6. Strong communication, problem‑solving, and follow‑through skills, with a high level of accuracy and accountability.
• 7. Must have valid authorization to work in the United States.
• 8. Must be available to work on‑site. Remote work is not available.

Preferred Qualifications

• 1. An active U.S. Customs Broker License.
• 2. Experience with a U.S. customs brokerage, international freight forwarder, or cross‑border e‑commerce logistics provider.
• 3. Experience handling ocean imports and shipments subject to additional government agency requirements.
• 4. Experience reviewing customs procedures, investigating clearance exceptions, or supporting compliance audits.
