Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) is seeking a Senior Counsel - Surety to join the Legal Department and support underwriting and strategic initiatives across global surety operations.

The role reports to the Vice President and Chief Counsel - Surety and involves collaborating with underwriters, brokers and customers, negotiating terms, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Candidates should have 10+ years in surety / construction law and be licensed to practice.

Qualifications

• Law degree required; business, engineering, or finance undergrad a plus.
• 10+ years' experience in surety claims, surety and construction law, or underwriting support.
• Licensed attorney in the applicable jurisdiction.
• Strong time management, prioritization, and ability to balance priorities.
• Ability to travel up to 30% and work within a team.

Responsibilities

• Advise on risk and legal issues to underwriters and senior management.
• Negotiate with brokers, bond customers, obligees and related parties.
• Manage Co-Surety relationships and related agreements.
• Research laws and regulations impacting surety products.
• Monitor legal/regulatory developments affecting surety and construction.
• Develop training materials and underwriting guidance for surety professionals.
