Chicago Public Schools (CPS) seeks an Assistant General Counsel, Special Education to join the School Law Unit in the CPS Law office. This role advises the Office for Students with Disabilities and school-based administrators on special education matters, reporting to the Deputy General Counsel and collaborating with senior counsel.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school; Illinois bar in good standing.
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Minimum five years of legal practice with knowledge of Illinois School Code and IDEA.

Responsibilities

• Handling complex special education and school law matters.
• Manage and mentor a team of Special Education Attorneys; assign matters and oversee caseloads.
• Represent CPS in due process hearings, mediations, State complaints, and 504 matters.
• Ensure timely, well-researched, and professional written work aligned with CPS mission and policies.
• Support and train staff and school administrators during IEP and 504 meetings.
