Job summary

American Electric Power seeks an experienced regulatory attorney to provide timely and strategic legal guidance for the Company’s interests. You will review and interpret laws and regulations affecting operations and help formulate positions on proposed legislation and regulatory matters.

The role requires at least eight years of regulatory practice, an active license to practice law in eligible jurisdictions, and the ability to work independently while promoting teamwork and strong

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and Juris Doctorate are required.
• Eight+ years of experience as a practicing regulatory attorney in private practice or corporate legal department.
• Active license to practice law in at least one of the AEP jurisdictions (VA, WV, IN, OK, LA) or Ohio.

• Review, analyze, and interpret laws, regulations, judicial and administrative decisions, and other materials affecting Company operations.
• Review proposed legislation and regulations and provide input on the Company’s position.

Job description

• Provide timely and appropriate legal advice regarding the legal interests of the Company
• Review, analyze, and interpret laws, regulations, judicial and administrative decisions, and other legal materials affecting Company operations and interests
• Review proposed legislation and regulations and provide input in formulating the Company's position
• Prepare amended language and other documentation to support or oppose legislation and regulations
• Support AEP vertically integrated operating companies in preparing and litigating Integrated Resource Plans and Certificates of Public Convenience and Necessity and similar proceedings before state regulatory commissions
• Align work with AEP Legal Department goals
• Work with in-house and outside counsel on legal matters
• Participate in management of outside legal resources as necessary
• Provide legal services to reduce legal and regulatory risk while supporting operating company or business unit objectives
• Demonstrate the highest standards of ethical behavior and support the Company's Principles of Business Conduct
• Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree and Juris Doctorate
• Eight plus years of experience as a practicing regulatory attorney in private practice or in a corporate legal department
• Active license to practice law in at least one of the AEP vertically integrated operating company jurisdictions (VA, WV, IN, OK, LA) or Ohio
• Ability to promote teamwork and build relationships within the team get work accomplished
• Ability to take initiative and work independently of direct supervision
